Mori_Yuki: Who would I recommend making the switch to 11 to?
Is it available to all Windows 10 users already?

If so, I might just as well try it out on my work laptop (which is now running Windows 10 Pro). I'd prefer to do a clean install if possible, I am not a fan of release upgrades, either in Windows or Linux. A clean table, that's where I want my dinner to be served.

My work laptop is a good candidate for that as it doesn't really matter what OS I am running there, as long as I can connect to my workplace with VPN and remote desktop, and it can run MS Teams and Skype. I do almost all my work on a remote server through the RDP. I can do all that also on my Linux PCs.

(Which kinda gives me the idea that if this laptop has a slot for another SSD, I could buy one and try to install Windows 11 Pro and Linux Mint side by side... or should I be even more adventurous and install Manjaro or Rocky Linux instead of Mint?!?)

I am now in a tinkering mood, I'd like to try to upgrade my old Samsung J5 (2016) phone to the unofficial Android 10 release by rooting the phone (the last official Android for that Samsung phone is 7.1.1).

The roll-out process has started Oct. 5. According to MS it will take until mid-2022 until it is available to all users. Since you prefer a clean install, just download the ISO from Microsoft or from magazine websites you trust.

rabblevox: Windows 11 might not be avoidable, I'm not even sure if it should be.

Does ANYONE have field-testing for Win11 with GOG?

Inquiring minds want to know. ;)
Just had the update rolled out to my desktop.

Initial reports are promising:

Games:

HOMM III (GoG) working perfectly
Mafia III (GoG) working perfectly
F1 2011 (GFWL) working perfectly (Windows 10 fixes carried over automatically)
Sid Meier's Sim Golf (Retail) working perfectly
Quake II RTX (nVidia) working perfectly

Software:
Word 2019 working perfectly
PCem v17 working perfectly
The Complete National Geographic (Adobe AIR version) working perfectly
Coolsoft VirtualMIDISynth needed to reinitialise the MIDI Driver in elevated mode. Now working perfectly

Still to test MUNT.

Yeah I googled and I got the impression that anyone can e.g. create a bootable USB installation stick with the MS Media Creation Tool (which I've used before to install Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 from a clean table).

I didn't see the option to upgrade to Windows 11 in Windows Update yet, so that option apparently comes later to me, but e.g. that MS Media Creation Tool option should be possible already now, it seems. At least my laptop seems to fulfill the Windows 11 requirements, according to the health check program.

Yes you can create a boot USB (NB, you need a 64 Gig stick, 32 is no longer enough). You also can, and should, create a recovery point before installation. Even though 11 is a pretty slick install, YMMV.

I've found (so far) 1 game that needed work to run:
Two Worlds Epic Edition needed an 8 year old legacy driver from Nvidia, but it was easy to figure out, install, and play the game.

I've found (so far) these GOG games work flawlessly with Windows 11:
Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion
Baldurs'Gate EE, BG 2 EE, Planescape EE, NWN EE
Dragon Age: Origins
Disco Elysium
Ultima 1-6
Fallout 1,2,3, Fallout New Vegas
Psychonauts
Tyranny
System Shock 1,2
Prey
Witcher 1,2 and 3
Far Cry 1,2

So, that's a small fraction of my 500+ games. The fact that only one game so far needed fiddling speaks well of the upgrade. I've gotta say, so far, I'm pleased.
(but PLEASE remember that by default, Win11 opens you to serious privacy no-no's, y'all gotta do yer due diligence)

Overall, 11 is 3rd best upgrade in terms of function (after XP and 10) and absolutely the best in terms of ease of use.

Here is my list of games I have tried so far:

Avernum (the original)
Filament
GameDec
Agatha Christie - Hercule Poirot - The First Cases
Kingsway
Tooth and Tail
ENCODYA
Horizon Zero Dawn
Wolfenstein - The Old Guard
Wolfenstein - The New Order
Spellforce Platinum
Corpse Party (2021)
Dead in Vinland
Per Aspera
Vaporum (1)
Loop Hero
Disco Elysium (with the issue that, when the main character moves, the game stutters. I think this is a known Unity issue and should have nothing to do with the OS...)
Hidden Through Time (main + DLC)
Quake II RTX
The Witness
Eador: Genesis
Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force I
Metamorphosis
Shadow Tactics: Baldes of the Shogun
Medieval Dynasty
In Other Waters
Two Worlds Epic
The Marvellous Miss Take (Suffering the same abysmal performance problems it did on 10. Again an engine problem of some sort...)
Desktop Dungeons Enhanced Edition
Wartile (main + DLC)
Factorio
EXAPUNKS
Soldiers: Heroes of World War II

Update 05.11
JARS
Order of Battle: World War II (without any DLC installed at the moment)
Dread Nautical
Legend of Keepers - Career of a Dungeon Manager (with DLC Return of the Goddess)
Operencia: The Stolen Sun (I really shouldn't have tried this... hearing the intro and the next thing I know it's 3 hours later... ;-))

Desperados III (without DLC)
This game seems to have some issues when starting it for the first time. The game started, the process minimized to the taskbar, the cursor changed to the in-game arrow. After clicking on the minimized task, it switched to fullscreen with black background. One click in this screen brought up a crash message but game started loading, audible sound but no screen and then the Logos of MIMIMI and Publisher. Starting a game proper had a short gap of 5 to 10 seconds where sound played and screen went black. Once in-game everything worked just fine at highest settings. I haven't experienced any of these issues on 10 with a GTX 1070-OC 8GB and not sure what the cause could be. It did happen only on first start so far, so there is hope it has solved itself.

Update 06.11
Beyond a Steel Sky
The Outer Worlds (with Peril on Gorgon and Murder on Eridanos)
Tandem - A Tale of Shadows
The Bard's Tale IV Directors Cut
State of Mind
The Moment of Silence
Alba: A Wildlife Adventure
Syberia 1 (I had to set the desktop resolution to 1024x768 for the game to run. A known issue on modern systems.)
Hearts of Iron III (plus DLC collection)
Godhood
Gothic I (Runs only with 4GB Patch as well as setting compatibility to run as administrator and Windows 7)
Crookz - The Big Heist (Warning: After finishing setup, no shortcut was placed on desktop or in the start menu. On first start via Crookz.exe the Kalypso Launcher has had to be updated. In order to play the game must be allowed to connect to the Internet. The following processes would have to be added to the firewall exception list: Crookz.exe, AppData.exe and KalypsoLauncher.exe)
Revenant
Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind
Dungeon Souls
Ember
Attack of the Earthlings
Deponia 4 Doomsday
Nox™
Venetica Gold Edition (Needs PhysX-Legacy to run which isn't included in the GOG version.)

Update 07.11
Tower of Time
Automachef
Divinity 2 Directors Cut (It should run but may suffer from poor performance. Using the 4GB Patch so the game can make use of more than 4GB as well as limiting fps and disabling threaded optimization should help.)
Wizardry VIII
Out There: Ω Edition
StarCrawlers
Blackguards Special Edition
Quake 4
Sherlock Holmes: Secret of the Silver Earring

Update 08.11
Fate Hunters
Unreal Tournament 2004 GOTY
Secret Files 3
Heroes of Hammerwatch (with Witch Hunter, Moon Temple and Pyramid of Prophecy)
Mutant: Year Zero Road to Eden (with Seed of Evil)
Hexplore
MISTOVER (with Dr. Fausts Otherworldly Adventure)
Outcast
Outcast 1.1
Outcast - Second Contact

Update 09.11
Daikatana (It entered an infinite loop during the intro sequence. A restart and skipping it allowed me to play it for about an hour or so without crash.)
Baldur's Gate: The Original Saga
Star Trek™: Away Team
Spellforce III (This one has had several issues. There was the 57% load-bug and a crash when the game tried to clean up after itself. Known and allegedly fixed but still seems to occur. Running the game as administrator and setting the processor affinity to cores 4,5,6,7 had the game execute and exit like normal.)
Legend of Grimrock
Silver (It has sound stuttering issues during the intro sequence, which is a known bug.)
Grim Dawn (64-bit) (with Ashes of Malmouth, Forgotten Gods, Crucible, Loyalist Item Pack (1, 2))

Update 10.11
F.E.A.R. Platinum Collection
Project Highrise (plus Las Vegas, Tokyo Towers, Miami Malls, London Life and Brilliant Berlin)
Eschalon: Book I
The Witcher I Enhanced Edition
The Interactive Adventures of Dog Mendonça and Pizzaboy®
LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4
This Is the Police
KYN
Jade Empire: Special Edition
Depths of Peril
Unforseen Incidents
XIII

The Bard's Tale IV - Barrows Deep
The Bard's Tale IV: Director's Cut

Update 30.11
Corpse Party: Sweet Sachiko’s Hysteric Birthday Bash
SKYHILL

Update 27.12
Paradise Killer
Gothic III (This game was listed as not working. BlackRedDead opened a topic in the Gothic Series forum section, which was causing me to revisit this game and see whether there is a fix. The culprit is the shader-cache creation which fails when an option in the ge3.ini is activated. It is set to false by default. Here is the solution presented to BlackRedDead in case you suffer the same problem.)
The Settlers® 2: 10th Anniversary
True Fear: Forsaken Souls Part 1
Stranglehold

-.-.-.-..-.-.-..-.-.-..-.-.-..-.-.-..-.-.-..-.-.-.

GAMES NOT WORKING

-.-.-.-..-.-.-..-.-.-..-.-.-..-.-.-..-.-.-..-.-.-.

The final list will be in alphabetic order and comments moved to a separate post. The games listed have all been tested with the latest available version for download from the offline installer library.

More will be added as I play them.

rabblevox the Legacy driver you mention, is it the PhysX Legacy driver? If so, this should be installed along with the main game.

timppu: I'm not sure that comparison works, as there was Windows 8 and 8.1 between Windows 7 and 10. I recall especially Windows 8 wasn't received that peacefully, even by me, and many chose to remain in Windows 7 instead of migrating to 8 or 8.1, which in the end apparently were free upgrades to all Windows 7 users IIRC, just as Windows 10 eventually was as well. At this very moment, I am downloading Rocky Linux, which is supposed to fill the gap that CentOS left.

I just learned today it has been finally released, so I am going to install it in VirtualBox ASAP, to see if there are any real differences to RHEL8 or OEL8, or all the same shit works the same (I hope).

More related to my work, now we can possibly offer a free alternative to customers who prefer RHEL Linuxes to Ubuntus. We have already installed e.g. OEL8 to some such customers, but who knows if Oracle eventually does the same as IBM did with CentOS...
Heh, I don't blame the non-desire to go with a cutting edge distro like Fedora, but any further hats in the building is a good thing. I just like the way everything is so sane with these.
Honestly I think I'll stick with Win 10 until October 15 2025.

Something that means it shouldn't be installed on a work laptop, or otherwise all our company secrets go to Microsoft?

Phuck it, maybe I'll install Windows 11 and Linux (Mint, Manjaro, Rocky, not sure...) side by side, and use the Linux installation for my work, and Windows 11 for games. LOL, I don't care if MS finds out what I've been playing lately.

You're describing a security issue, not a privacy one. Sure, there's some overlap, but not in your example. But maybe you weren't being serious...

That's my assumption. Microsoft wouldn't put something in that would impact its ability to be the main OS for enterprise use.
Win11 did want to install itself on my laptop the other day, but as it has AMD CPU, I'm less than willing to give it a go. In general, I decided not to jump in instantly and I'm now just watching how things evolve.

Maybe not directly, but there's a reason Death of a thousand cuts is such an apt metaphor.

I heard that issue got patched. I do agree though - although I pushed the button with mine (driven by having a lot of spare time over the weekend), usually I'd advise to wait.
