ZeroDrm: If your conditions and circumstances allow you to chose Linux over Windows, I strongly recommend doing so. In my experience you have less freedom and privacy with Windows. There are applications and services that I don't use that I can't disable/uninstall, and Microsoft has gone there way to pester you to come on board their business ship where they use you to earn money even though they stated "Windows 10 is free". Now I don't know about your definition but free means no strings attatched or at very least freedom given to us to say "I don't want to be part of your business".
Most of us can't go to Linux and will never go to Linux because of AAA PC versions of video games that will never be released for sale on Linux.

Plus there is DirectX 12 which a whole lot of PC versions of vidoe games are going to be start using and use.

DirectX 12 is a bonus on Windows 10 being a absolutely fantastic and a better performing Operatin System (OS).

Battlefield 1, Shadow Warrior 2, Mass Effect Andromeda, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Just Cause 3, Civilization VI, etc.

This is a bit off topic, but I'm curious. I'm about to buy Deus Ex: MD. Does it look or perform any different on Dx12 than on Dx11?

I wouldn't ask him. His statements are silly. Here is a video showing DX11 vs 12 performance:

I don't have the PC version of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided because I don't purchase PC versions of vidoe games from Steam anymore, but I do have the PC version of Battlefield 1 on Origin and it works fine in DirectX 12 and it looks absolutely amazing with all of the graphical settings on max settings.

I wasn't arguing that DX12 does not work fine or that B1 doesn't look amazing with all settings maxed. My point is that "DX12 support" means little when developers are making the game with DX11 in mind and then do a quick and dirty job for 12.

Ganni1987: 1) Linux is more secure than Windows for a reason, most software are found in the distro's dedicated repositories, it's open source and there's quality over quantity. Simply put most Linux software is delivered in a different way than Windows.

2) While partially true, Windows 7 had far less contact with the online world. Windows 8 was were it started showing it's teeth and this is shown right after a fresh installation where it asks you if you want to set "Express Settings" (aka Lack of privacy mode) or "Customize Settings" where it gives you the option to turn these features on/off.

3) "At such reduced performance", The difference in some games is much less than you make it seem like and it's far from an uninstall.

4) The software I suggested is from a reputable company, the link is from their official site.

5) I'll correct myself on the Windows Updates: The familiar options from Windows 7/8 can be found in the Group Policy Editor guide here.
1. FTP servers can and do get hacked that is why most post a checksum but in some cases like when apache was hacked the checksum on webpage was changed too to match infected binaries.

Open source doesn't always mean safe so few actually look through the code (while back there was huge exploit that looked inserted into linux kernal discovered that needed to be fixed) or compile it. Sourceforge had a huge influx of 'open source' projects with infected binaries

2. Do you not have a firewall/router? You can literally check block all traffic and if you change windows 10 settings it actually blocks all the contacts with microsoft servers except updates.

3. Less is still not none. Some people can tolerate 10 fps... tolerating it and enjoyability are not the same.

4. All those such privacy tools just change the system registry which you can do by hand.
Biggest one is to disable Telemetry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\DataCollection

Again it is all there for advance users it just hidden from people that know little about windows.

Ganni1987: It does require some tweaking if you want it to work the way you want.
Fully agree with nix systems you have to do more tweaking like compling the drivers you want to use into the kernal so to improve performance instead of loading them.

Good luck explaining kernal recompliation to someone that doesn't want to use windows registry. You think those same people are custom to make utilities and using compilers?

You must be new to windows same arguement was made for dx 9 to dx10 now those people can't live without dx10+

And less security by design too.

If you don't like DRM - stay away from Windows.

I was saying that until developers have become used to DX12 it's not an argument for someone to chose W7/Linux/Mac over W10. I've looked at games with DX12 support and the difference in performance compared to 11 is negligible. Tomb Raider, Deus Ex: MD, B1, Quantum Break etc.
DigitalFoundry's comparison show DX11 performing better than 12.
It seems to me certain games who are getting DX12 support are more of experimental projects for the developers to get used to the api. And there are developers who state (paraphrasing here) that in order to take full advantage of apis like Vulkan and DX12 you need to make changes to game engines.

There are lots of "DX12" games yet I can't name a single one where the performance has been significant.

I loved Windows up to and including 2k. Recently gave 10 a try in VM and selected "expert" installation only to be confronted with 3 pages of "Do you want me to spy on you(Y/n)". Its such a personal data siphon, that I can't recommend it even to the "worst enemy".

Ganni1987 is perfectly right. Linux software is a combination of: a) open b) stored central place c) secure delivery d) fast updates. Its a combination that matters. Android and Apple have abandoned (a) and hence then been flooded with closed source nag/ad/backdoored -ware. They try to migitate with "software firewall", but Linux does not even need this, because (a) makes sure software does what its supposed to. Another thing is that Linux still has quite a lot of firmware to help drive bits of some hardware (from only gold bits to unlock functionality for the (open) driver - to whole dynamically loaded software stack of some hardware piece). Now, that is a perfect attack vector.

Checksums are not for hack protection, checksums are for data integrity. Git uses checksums as "revisions", but its git. Gentoo family and to some extent Arch automatically compile whole software into the running system. Sourceforge has been infecting windows binaries with malware as part of its (SF) business, the projects did not originally have this malware.

With respect to Microsoft's new update policy, the question is rather, can one escape Windows 10?

If you don't want to be stuck on unsupported systems, your only option to escape Windows 10 is to ditch Windows entirely.

It depends...

If one is planning to stay with the Windows, then no, Windows 10 is mandatory. Sooner or later, Microsoft will have it its way. Sad but true. :-(

Of course, there are "Linux" and "Mac OS"... But the swithing process will be painful...

MicroSoft is going to be supporting Windows 10 for like 10 years or even longer since MicroSoft said it's their last numbered Windows version.

So there is no reason to ditch Windows 10 at all.

Unfortunately there are plenty. Switching the main machine to Linux becomes more and more the most reasonable approach.
end of life for 8.1 is 2023 and for 10 its 2025
