Yeah, achievements for older games should be something that GOG considers seriously, they would add an extra value compared to Steam and make even younger users play the most vintage games.
This would not even require too much effort.

ChoaZz: Will there ever be Achievement for older games?
we barely ever see here achievements for new games(that have them on steam but not on gog) and you're talking about older games. lol

it's more important to have assbook, i mean facebook then things like achievements. things that ACTUALLY related to games. unlike assbook.
You can have the achievement of just enjoying the game, without any annoying popups\messages getting in the way and breaking the game immersion. ( :

kbnrylaec: In fact, GOG could do it quite easily. Just use a patched DOSBox or ScummVM, and hundreds of games will have achievement immediately.

toxicTom: And how is that supposed to work? Achievements have to be implemented in the game, and then (if supported) the client running it is notified. The old games simply had no achievements, to implement them you would need the source code and basically make a port with triggers at certain points in the game.
You can make a layer over the game, which tracks what you do. There's really no need to do anything with the source code.
I hope not, achievement whores can often be quite annoying.

Just as steam trading card whores .

Depending on the game it could also be interesting to analyze the game saves.

Absolutely. I've no real idea what that is but I've read disturbing talk of it on IRC.
There is achievements in all old games, you play through and see the final credits roll, marvel that you wasted ten hours on a game, then install the next one. That is the totality of gaming "achievements".

oh come on, you know everything about it. to know so much about whores, is to be one. ;)

Starmaker: Unless you want to see them in the game's interface, nope, it's not required. Achievements are scorekeeping, you don't need copyright for that.
Frankly I think it's quite likely that the agreements only allow GOG to make changes and additions to the game releases that serve compatibility and that something like even packaging a game with an emulator that adds achievements might be beyond the scope of the license.

Pff, you're only saying that because I have almost twice as many achievements as you do. Suckeeeer!

Ten hours is pretty optimistic... also if they're wasted, you've been playing the wrong game.

Starmaker: The client can dig into the game's internals (saves or memory).
Ok, I see how that could be a possibility. Like back in the day when we were hacking memory addresses to get lots of gold in Civ...

Would have to done for each game separately though... for every single achievement. Also later games scrambled the memory addresses to prevent cheating...

I think this would be a cool hobby project for some enthusiast. But considering the amount of work this would take I doubt a company like GOG (who are short on manpower already) would direct time and money to a project like this.

you need to look up the definition of " easy" :p
sure it is doable, but it certainly would require quite some time and effort

( and I am not quite sure how you would even do useful achievements for ScummVM games ? )

I...don't really get what you are saying since you are quoting the post about Steam trading cards and I have no clue what those are since I don't use Steam. As for achievement whores, they post in forums often enough, so it's not difficult to know about them.

Off-topic, but it's weird that GOG somehow re-enabled my profile for whatever reason.
As for the number, I have no clue how I got so many (24) since I only really played Crypt of the Necrodancer and Hotline Miami (if that has achievements).
