Do you think so? Right now Steam does not at all care for their users and sees them as just a bunch of money bags that are expendable and especially milkable.
I used to be a Steam fan but now im trying to stay away from it, i was VAC Banned from Counter Strike Global Offensive despite having no cheats whatsoever. Because of Valve's 'no tolerance' policy they don't even allow tickets to be forwarded to them about it, i emailed Valve employees but got absolutely no response and VacReview@valvesoftware.com is DEAD.
I do have hard proof i am innocent however, CS GO lets you save your last 8 matches as a demo which i did with the latest 3 matches.

I want GOG to be huge, maybe even better than steam, steam thinks it can get away with anything.
They can ban the whole population of Canada and people would still be throwing money at the screen and it's all because they are the "ultimate" online retailer, how close is GOG coming to contest that title and get valve off their high horse?

It's a Catch 22. To compete with Steam they need to be more like Steam and if they do that I'm outta here!

I think that when Galaxy is mostly feature complete and stable for 99% of people's hardware configurations, GOG will have a much better footing for gaining more customers from the gaming community at large. DRM-Free is a fantastic feature that GOG provides that I love, but Galaxy is what has really helped me stay in the GOG ecosystem.

This, coupled with getting more recent and bigger titles released on their platform (if they can get big game devs/publishers to abide by DRM-Free standards) would be a big plus.

Steam is great at what they do and GOG does alright with what they do.

lol @ thinking demo's of the last couple of matches proves *anything*. They're delayed for a reason. If you think you should've not gotten a VAC ban because you weren't cheating *when you got banned*, there's your issue.

Also, GOG isn't interested in competing with Steam at any level. That's not part of their business strategy or their ideology. Their biggest competitor is the Humble Bundle, which offers Steam keys on top of DRM-Free copies. That's something they're only recently attempting.

This is a pretty subjective and actually rather pointless question really. It isn't a competition to begin with, it is a business. GOG's primary purpose like any business is to make money, not just profit but grow their business and they're doing precisely these things. Is Steam a competitor in the business sense? Absolutely. So is EA/Origin, Ubisoft, Blizzard, Gamersgate, GMG and every other company out there that makes and/or sells video games.

The video game market is the largest of all of the submarkets in the entertainment industry and it is growing every year in popularity. It has dwarved sports, television, movies and every other form of entertainment in terms of making money hand over fist for some time now. This means there is an endless stream of money that people are willing to spend in order to by video game entertainment products, and there are endless opportunities for businesses to produce profit and growth in this market sector as long as they have a good business model that the market reacts well to in order to produce consistent profits.

Year over year since GOG's inception the company has grown steadily and have drawn a steady stream of new customers to their site and grown their userbase. This in turn has drawn more and more video game publishers to recognize their ability to sell games and produce profit in the industry to come on board with some of their games, which in turn has drawn more and more users in. To date, the GOG business formula is a winning formula in that they are more successful and profitable tomorrow than they were yesterday and this continues to be the case month after month, year after year. That is the sign of a successful business in this or any industry really, one that has a solid business model that consistently produces profits and growth.

The video game market is not a one-winner-takes-all deathmatch arena. It's no different than department stores, grocery stores, clothing stores or an other business type that fills a place in the market, there is plenty of room for many businesses to succeed in this market and the smart ones know too that competition is good for the customers and the businesses themselves. There are opportunities for companies to differentiate their business to provide value-add or USP (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unique_selling_proposition) and GOG certainly has their own rather unique USP in the video game marketplace.

So, will GOG ever "truly" (what does that even mean?) compete with Steam? The answer is that the question is both irrelevant, subjective and nonsensical to say the least. The real question is - does GOG have a solid viable business model to sustainably produce reliable profit and growth in the competitive video game retail industry in an ongoing basis? The answer to that from all of the information that is visible to the public is "yes" in that they consistently have grown their customer base at an accelerated pace year over year, and their profitability and growth as well (CDP is a publicly traded company and one can look up their numbers if desired). That is all that matters, it isn't a deathmatch to the end king of the hill style against Steam, and their business objective isn't bloodsport versus Steam winner-takes-all.
