Will GOG ever have controller support/Big Picture? Maybe, but not anytime soon.

I'm someone who can't play long with a keyboard, not unless I don't want to be able to use my hands pain free for a day or two after. Same goes for Playstation controllers, but that's more because they are just uncomfortable for me. I play FPS in short bursts if it doesn't have controller support, but i'm more of a RPG, strategy (not much keyboard use) and horror game kinda guy anyway. Those kinda games often either has native controller support, not much keyboard use, or it's a breeze to map using 3rd party software without impacting the designed experience.
I highly recommend a simple wireless lap keyboard with a trackpad on it for TV use. I don't usually have my PC on the TV because I play damn near everything with KB&M, but I know someone at work who uses a media center PC with that kind of small wireless 2-in-1 and he loves it.
I would love to see GOG add controller support and a Big Picture Mode, like Steam has.

I use those all the time.

Vendor-Lazarus: I certainly hope not.
Controllers on PC is a blemish.

It forces downgrades in usable keys and mechanics.
I've had to use AutoHotKey more and more these days, because so many games don't properly support mouse and keyboard. Mainly not having a re-binding option (or be able to bind to mouse buttons).
That's without going into the other effects crossplatforming is having. Like OTS cams, cutscenes galore, scripted actions, etc.

If you want to use a controller, consider gaming on a console.
In a way star wars battlefront (2005) is to complicated to set up using a regular controller. You can map the axis of the joystick independently something not allowed in steam input. Allowing for controller is a good thing and your argument has nothing to do with controller. what devs need to do is make every game as good as battlefront when it comes to button mapping but also have some defaults for you to select. Fortnite got an update that made it perfect when it comes to controller support. the only thing i did not test on fortnight and i think game devs need to do is to allow players to use both mouse, keyboard, and controller at the same time. as long as i can do that and get my steam controller to work then i have no issues.

yeah but most games are developed for consoles first sadly :=
so controller support on pc wont downgrade games

Proper controllers makes gaming a lot more fun.

It forces downgrades in usable keys and mechanics.
Devs, publishers and Microsoft did that. Blame them.

The switch has two 6 axis motion controllers as standard. The modern Sony dualshocks have motion sensing and a touchpad.
I would rather have proper games on the PC for them.

I'm glad this discussion is here because I've been a member for some time now and have two particular video games that was the very reason I signed up. However after discovering the keyboard only layout I haven't gone too far in the game. So, consider this my vote for controller support.

I would suggest asking the developer first.
"I'm not here to argue which is better between keyboard & controllers."
Proceeds to argue why controllers are better.
really depends on the game. some games are better keyboard and mouse while others (Witcher 3) is better on a controller. i would use either depending on what im playing and which works better
Unlike a few here, I've been on computer game since the 80's and gamepad is my go to first unless the game is specifcally made for kb+m.

I hope GOG never gets caught up in that nonsense OP is asking for. The should be on the individual game devs to do.

I do a lot of HTPC gaming and you can find plenty of open source or 3rd party software to manage all of that if you want.

If OP really wants that I highly suggest you take a look at Emulation Station. It not only does consoles and handhelds but you can import your computer games to is as well even the modern stuff and it will help with big picture (unless the game forbids it) and gamepad support (same deal).

The first time I played the games I'm referring to were on console with controllers.

I highly prefer Witcher 3 with M+K. I hate looking around with a gamepad in 3D games - so slow and clumsy.

There are games where I switch - Like NMS - M+K for walking around, gamepad for flying. Or CP77.

It would be cool to navigate Galaxy with a controller though...
I think games that don't have controller support do that for a reason; like the vast majority of strategy games that are out there, and older games designed for PC.

Today the main genre I can think of that don't have much of any controller support is strategy gaming. the few of these that do have controller support are games that also target a big console audience, like Stellaris and Civilization VI. The overwhelming majority of strategy games however, are developed by smaller studios whose games will not attract console gamers, thus removing the need for controller support.

You can still couch-game with k&m. I couch-game as well, but use a wireless keyboard and mouse together with a portable "lap board" or "lap desk", like this one: https://ameriergo.net/products/aeld01l-lap-desk-laptop-lap-desk-natural-wood
