"Game compatability."
Exactly. I need to use an X-Box 360 along with X-Padder in order to play games. Missing a couple left hand fingers.
X-Padder doesn't support Linux.
So I'll most likely use W7 until its no longer supported.

Have you tried installing the proprietary graphics drivers (through system settings --> driver manager)? The open source drivers for Nvidia graphics cards aren't very good
Why linux indeed!
Just saw this thread and for anyone that might be interested, here is my story:

By 2002-03, while attending to the IT school, I made my first contact with Unix & Linux. But it wasn't before ~2005 that I installed Linux on my XP machine (dual boot) for the first time. I've been using Ubuntu for nearly 2-3 years and my experience with it was great. I felt safe for the first time. A unique piece of mind that I've never experienced with Windows, where I had to be extra cautious with everything while online (or not).

So, it was in 2005 that I completely stopped using Windows for my online needs, but I kept them installed just for the games and later for music production tasks where I've been using a variety of hardware & software that hasn't been 100% compatible with Linux. Since then, I used more than a handful of distros and tried more than 20-25 just to see what fits me better.

As for the future, I can't see returning to Windows for anything online related since security is a serious matter to me but I won't stop using them offline for gaming/ music related tasks.

If system hangings occur without reason at various points in time, I suspect a kernel panic (fatal error).
I suggest to use a tool (like kdump) to check the kernel dump for possible causes (maybe you will find this useful).

Actually, music production can be done rather well on Linux, from what I understand.

(Also, https://lmms.io/ shows up on the Google search. Maybe I should install LMMS myself and see what I can come up with.)
Why Mikey D's? Why not go to the market, get some fresh meat, cook it yerself?

Yep, it can be done as long as your hardware permits it. But even though my equipment worked on Linux, the problem for me was the audio quality I was getting; I experienced cracks, latency and other audio artifacts to a point that drove me crazy when I was in the mood for some recording. I couldn't find a way to resolve the sound issues back then (I guess the culprit was my soundcard) so I switched back to Windows where the problems I had were minimal.

Another thing is the DAW; back then I was using Cubase on Windows and when I got to use Ardour, I didn't like it very much. I'm sure that the current version of Ardour is much much better, but I don't feel I have the energy or the free time to get used/ learn Ardour, after having spend so much time learning & working with another DAW.

The way I've set my current system on Win7 is perfect (no problems with sound quality whatsoever) and works every time i want to sit down and record something, so I guess it's better for me to stay with it some more time until I try to move my music stuff on Linux again. :)
I mostly use Linux because I need an OS for the occassional gaming (I don't want to buy an OS for this purpose) and I can install it on an USB stick. It's a pain in the ass, but Windows seems to be about as bad if not worse.
Windows is not very user friendly due to the lack of a proper package manager and the work you have to put into it to make it at least temporarily a bit more secure and private although the privacy settings can (and have been often) changed remotely by MS anyway, so it's a sisyphean task.
I changed my main OS from WinXP 32bit to Linux Mint 64bit when XP support ended, because I wasn't willing to accept more DRM and the increasingly bad design of more current Windows versions plus the price was too high. I've still got my old WinXP installed as an offline secondary gaming partition, but only use it for a few games while most of my games run well in Linux anyway. Office stuff, data management, browsing, etc... works better in a Linux environment anyway, even if it isn't a very slim one.

When there's a Linux port of Witcher 3 around, I'll get myself a new Linux only system with fitting hardware, until then I'm good with my 7 year old office PC and the GTX 750 I shoved into it.

To anyone bored to death of these timeless window$ vs Linux discussions:
It would be great to have a separated general forum for Linux users, where there are no constant OS wars.
I'm no Linux missionary myself and I think that some people will never switch to Linux nor trying it, also they will always find something to complain about it.
And forcing to adopt it will create just a lot of disinterested people ready to give up at the first problem, a lot of them will stick with micro$oft even if they need to install the next window$ 11 (inches) straight in the a$$.
I've created a wishlist about this matter:

http://www.gog.com/wishlist/site/add_a_linux_general_discussion_forum_to_general_forums

I think it is a great idea for both OS lovers, if someone get interested they can take a look and find a lot of info, but if someone don't care, than they won't get harassed by penguins :)

please GOG give us our Linux ghetto!!

This may be a good idea.
The problems of Linux users in this gaming community could be discussed and ironed out. May take some load off GOG support.
I don't see this thread as part of a war. Most of these guys came out here to help me make a decision, for which I am grateful.
Did vote for your petition Manero666.
Cheers!
Many of the game-specific forums contain Linux threads, which basically contain most of the information you'd get anyways. And we have a stickied linux thread in the general forum although I believe it's been abandoned.
