Ogdin: Annnd HELLO! thread necro, how have you been? Haven't seen you since last year, hows the family? Me? Could be better, been waiting for GOG to start adding VN's at some point...
Hey, good. Necro is good for forum's health as well, especially for something like this thread. xD

UnrealQuakie: Diablo 2 STRIKES AGAIN!

ps I don't consider vn's games at all they are interactive books with moving images. but it's welcome here any day by me ;)
That's the attitude. Some people are so hellbent on refusing VN when they have the option -or prerogative - not to buy. Nobody points gun at your head to buy VN, right? xD
Not a fan of them personally but they turned out to be so popular on Steam that it's now overflowing with them.

The only one I've played is VA-11 HALL A and that's just because I'm a total sucker for anything Cyberpunk. Though I don't think that's a full on VN?

Lol, kind of a random necro-bump, but... ok.

In all honestly, I don't really think there's a massive need for VNs on GOG. It'd be cool, yeah, but most of them are released DRM-free already, at this point. Granted, there's some holdouts (I'm lookin' at you, Spike Chunsoft), but we're still doing pretty well even if GOG doesn't seem to give a shit about the genre.

But seriously. We need Dangan fucking Ronpa.
All's well that ends well.

Good old times.

Yes, GOG opening the floodgates to this stuff is concerning, for me. I don't want it to become a "Steam, but DRM-free", because curation and "keeping the non-games out of here" is what brought me to GOG, it's more relevant than having no DRM, as far as I'm concerned. I'm not reluctant to changes, I just don't want GOG to drop their curation standards just to make more money by appealing to japanese VNs fans.

Why does accepting VN games seem to imply a drop in curation standards to you?
It's okay to not like them. Personally I've only recently started playing a few, when I originally thought they looked boring. But to just disregard the entire genre and assume they're somehow of lower quality than what is already on GOG is woefully ignorant in my opinion.

So, you believe that visual novels aren't quite games. Is that the only problem?

Yup, I wouldn't mind them being in a separate section of GOG like movies are. It's mixing them with games that's bad, imho. At least, most of them (the ones with actual gameplay are perfectly fine).

As far as I'm concerned, games with DRM are *non-games* to me. For all practical purposes, at least. It is either DRM-free or no game.

As for VNs, I think it could work to just add a separate tab in the genres; that way, the VNs are all together and you don't have to click through VNs to browse the games you might want to buy. I wouldn't mind if they put it as a separate tab like movies.

And to add my two cents, I'm not sure whether I would consider VNs as a gaming genre or not but I don't object to them being here. If they aren't considered games, fair enough, but is something like Quicktimeevent: Indigo Prophecy really that much different?

I see. In that case, methinks, it would be better to add your wish to the community wishlist. Simply claiming that "bad times are upon us" is unlikely to change anything, other than turning you into a downvote magnet, as people are bound to mistake you for yet another Japanophobe and/or someone who believes that all VNs are lewd. Incidentally, I certainly wouldn't mind a separate store category for visual novels.
