Maybe it's me, but I SWEAR Windows 10 is slooooooooooooooooow when it comes to copying files. Look at these sceenshots. Over 30 minutes to copy about 7GB. I can download 7 GB in a matter of minutes (less than 5 minutes on Steam).

I've been noticing it since going to Windows 10, but this is ridiculous. I got PassMark software and checked my drive and it came in at the 99th percentile LOL. So, I don't think it's my drive.

What did Windows 10 do to make copying so slow?? Does it have something to do with Windows Defender??? I was thinking that was it maybe, but I can't see any way possible to disable Windows Defender.

EDIT: Well, sorry, it seems I cut off the first screenshot. But trust me, the total when it started said it was about 6.7GB remaining. And note the time. 9:19 PM. And note the time on the second one when it was almost (FINALLY) finished... 9:55. 36 minutes. To copy files. WTF?

ADDED: Should have made clear. This is copying from one folder to another on my D: Hard Drive. My C: drive is an SSD. My D: drive is a 7200RPM spinning drive.

7 gigs in 5 minutes? I want your connection.

Yeah, it's awesome. 30GB/s on Steam, consistently.

In fact, thought it's slower here at GoG, I could probably almost do 7GB in 5 minutes. Might not be completely done, but I bet I'd be close.

EDIT: Oops, I mean 30MB/s not 30GB/s. LOL

Are you copying from one drive to another or to an external storage device? If so, it has to do with how they're connected. For example, if you're copying to a USB stick and your connection is only USB 2, then it can't handle the same speed as your internet line.

*edit* Think of it as a pipe: your internet line is this gigantic pipe about 30 feet in diameter. But your devices are all connected to each other via much smaller diameter pipes. So the amount that drains through the smaller pipes takes a lot longer to occur than through the larger pipe.

Which may be one of the reasons, as you have to read from and write on the same drive at the same time (If it is a HDD, not an SSD). Also, writing many small files takes much longer than single large files.

Mm. good question. How can I find out?? Will it be listed under device manager or something? It is a lot of small files. It's mostly small files. But still.... 36 minutes??? I've backed up this same thing on other computers since Windows XP and I don't remember it ever taking this long.

I just tested on win 10. 7.3gb took little more than two minutes to copy between partitions on the same hdd.

EDIT: As Pherim has noted copying small files take significantly more time. However, don't if 30+ minutes is normal or not.

Win10 may be defragging/sorting for efficiency when it copies. Not sure. I've not had much of an issue with this unless I've copied from one drive to another. Then it can sometimes take a long while. Also, if it's a HDD instead of an SSD, like Pherim mentioned, this could also take a longer time.

Bottom line here though, OFG , is you got me. Not sure why it's taking that long.

Hmmm, I wonder if there's some kind of default Win10 setting where it's verifying files before copying or something like that.

Well, under device manager it lists my two drives (see screenshot)... but I don't know which is which and not sure this helps at all.... LOL. Man I'm a moron. I just don't know this stuff.
Ooops, my bad... yeah... 30MB/s. Jeez 30GB per second.... WOWZER! That would be awesome!!!

You're saying 'on the same drive' like that's a good thing, but in my experience copying between different drives is faster.
On old timey HDDs anyway.
