sanscript: "I come with sarcasm" ;)

First of all I made it just for for fun and because the obvious irony here (but you're not the first and certainly not the last either), and secondly I use an add-on that hides all that meaningless points and low-rates (which GOG are incapable of fixing, or better, remove).
I can't speak for others, but I realized the irony myself even before writing the first letter. I gladly own the fact that I'm now the town idiot, standing on a soap box, shouting in a megaphone "how everybody is so damn loud all the time and buys to much soap"

That said, I have a hard time reading sarcasm when it's my first interaction with a person. Glad there are no hard feelings here, just a few pokes.

By all means no, if I really had something against you, you would have heard it through my words, loud and clear. :D

Good on you.

This month is my 4 year anniversary of not buying anything from them. Personally think you should keep the account, but if this sends a message...

Orkhepaj: China isn't communist -they might they so in their propaganda, but it's just a totalitarian capitalism-of-state, where local corporation act with full government support.
that is communism
avatar
Enebias: No, it isn't.
Communism is when the means of production are common property of the same workers that use them.
Indisputable fact; if you heard anything else, you heard false information, and in general mass media is revoltingly ignorant on the matter -or maliciously intetioned to bend facts for their own agenda.
Communism has never been even attempted in a grand scale, it's more of an utopia, a fantasy rather than anything concrete. Lenin first completely corrupted the ideal.
Corporations aren't even thinkable in a true communist philosophy, they're fictitious entities made out of capital, ffs. There's nothing more anti-communist than that.

In China workers get nothing, only the oligarchs holding the rains have real authority.
BS. They call themselves communists, they act like communists, they plan the economy like communists and they kill and oppress like all other communists. It's always like that with communists: "hey, look, they're great communists, it works great there, we should be communists too just like them!" until shit hits the fan, then it becomes "yeah, freaking state-capitalists there, not real communists, what a shame!".

Xi Jing Poh is doing us a favor by showing his colors now that he's jailing Chinese capitalists there and menacing closing the economy (because it is a fiasco just as pointed out by international observers for ages and it is getting harder to conceal this to the World).

Chielus86: "A Polish company, during a time of democracy, is bowing to a the Communist Party of another nation."

The above is the TL/DR for those who only seek headlines. For others, here is the big wall of text:
CDPR is a Polish company. The country of Poland has a rich and well documented history when it comes to communism and what it has done to the nation. The countless dead, poverty and the loss of cultural identity are all real things that happened there. For those who know history, know that this is the natural outcome of communism.

Yes, I have products of China in my home, there is no avoiding it. But if I can help it, I do anything in my power to put it to a absolute minimum. I can help myself when it comes to gaming, mainly retro gaming, to avoid giving money to China or even power. Now we are at the point that a Polish company, disregarding their own history, is actively seeking positive feedback from communist China. Being a guy that studies history, my stomach turned in a bad way.

So yeah, leaving GoG as I cannot do business with communists or communist sympathizers.

Let's end with a positive though, I'm glad I could download my games to put them on my own backup server. This part of GOG has always been awesome and during a break-up, makes it that much easier to leave.

Have a great day all.
Give them a chance.

LeahKerr: Give them a chance.
I really believe we are all doing it by simply staying on the forums. As long as we are here we are giving them another chance.

The moment I'm done I'll simply disappear. Then people will say "yeah, two months have passed and now nobody seems to care" when in reality those that did are simply not in the forums anymore.

Well, remember the "they pretend they pay us and we pretend to work" thing from the soviet days

however, this is also true for capitalist countries

maybe humans are just bad

I still have a very thin sliver of hope that GOG will come around, but I'd be willing to get against it.

When support finally gets through the tens of thousands of support requests before me and deletes my account, that will also presumably delete my forum account and I'll finally stop bitching and whining like a vegetarian in a sausage factory.

No problem, dude. I just hope you also don't buy anything on Steam, Epic, Uplay, Origin, Battle.net, PlayStation, Xbox, etc. That would incredibly hypocritical on your part.

Newsflash: whatever problem you have with China and it's influence over the rest of the world, videogame companies can't do anything about it. In the grand scheme of things, videogame companies are as influential to world politics as a chain of grocery stores.

Videogame companies must be given a choice: bow to China or stick to its proclaimed values and loyal customers elsewhere. The only reason why they keep doing this sort of stuff is they are counting on Westerners and everyone else - that is, we - not doing what we proclaim we will.

They can and have survived without the money from China. They absolutely can't live with the money from everywhere else.

Besides, we keep talking about China. Well, they blamed it on the "gamers", I'm still waiting for a little honesty to come out of the GOG staff.

Shendue: That said, one thing is to do business with China, a complete different beast is to actively boycott a developer because they ask you to, for political reasons.
avatar
timppu: It is not a "political reason" for GOG.
He said it's another thing if China asks you to boycott something for political reasons. So, political reasons for China, not GOG.

avatar
timppu: Quite on the contrary, GOG made the decision because they want to stay the heck away from the political debacle that that game has caused.
How do you know? Did they tell you that in a private message because you just spent €120 with them (or maybe it was €150)? Because they certainly didn't explain it to anyone else.

avatar
timppu: It has nothing to do with GOG thinking Chinese regime is cool or "Taiwan is part of China" etc.
As a matter of fact, the backlash against this game in China had a lot to do with the fact that it's from Taiwan.

avatar
timppu: It is similar if someone published a game that has a picture of Mohammad (which would piss off all muslims in the world, just ask Charlie Hebro). or a game which ridiculates the late king of Thailand (which would piss off most Thai people).

If GOG decided not to release such a controversial game that pisses off many people, does it mean they approve islamic terrorism, or the current problems in Thai democracy?
Devotion has no political content. It was removed by a patch early on. Apparently the people who criticized the game were using pirate copies, so they never got the update that removed the object they complained about.

So no, it's not similar.

Completely irrelevant if the reasons for China to ask that were political, ideological, religious or extra-terrestrial.

The important thing is why GOG didn't want the game on their store.

How do you know China asked GOG not to release the game? Did they tell you that in a private message because blaa blaa blaa?

I used common sense, e.g. why I'd probably make that same decision if I was running GOG.

I haven't bought there in a long time, Steam that is. I have asked Blizzard to remove my account (just as I did here via ticket, pending removal atm) when they got involved with tencent. That included both my wow and hearthstone accounts.

I don't own any consoles newer then n64.

I don't even use Microsoft products, because of privacy policy. Don't use android or iOS for the same reasons (I use SailFish for those interested). It's quite delusional to think, even considering the above, that I can 100% keep my money where my mouth is. Nobody can, not Buddha, not Jesus, not Elvis, not me.

But I can give it my best to actually do what I believe in, rather then doing what is easy or expected.

I studied history and it's not only decided by the victor. It's also decided by (pop-)culture. The reason we think so highly of ancient Greece is because it was hip and trendy in the renaissance. But look at the books a few centuries earlier and they where considered drunk/morally corrupt/perverted freaks by their current culture. Speaking of Europe btw, just to make that clear.

Videogames are a very large portion of our daily culture. And it goes well beyond the cultural impact of a banana, as you tried to argue with the grocery stores. Many dictators rose to power due to some sort of media propaganda. And it works best if it's subtle while ramping up slowly. Hence why I stop at the start of the ramp, nearly always and every time.

What I'm trying to say here is that I rate your arguments 1/10, wouldn't argue again.

Robette: Reminds me of that time when the EU was eying sanctioning Poland over their disregard to democratic standards... ah, wait, that is now.
What disregard because from what I have heard it's the opposite.

Plenty of people are just assuming this at the moment.
