mechmouse: For those that remember the early days of the internet, we can remember a time full of hideous constantly looping gifs polluting the webpages.
A few years later the use of animated gifs was severely frowned upon. They made websites look cheap and unprofessional.
By 2010 they had all but gone, only appearing on pages still lurking from the late 90's or adorning the borders of the Mad cat lady's blog.
But in the last years I've seen them coming back.
Indeed, this is the 21st century, you'd think we would have moved to PNGs by now.A few years later the use of animated gifs was severely frowned upon. They made websites look cheap and unprofessional.

A few years later, most of those old people were dead, and only a few of them were still around, lurking on pages built in the late 90's or posting their complaints on the Mad cat lady's blog.

misteryo: They didn't come back. People who were young in the 90's are now old, and they are bitter and they complain. Animated GIFs are still the most widely supported animated file format, which works on most browsers and doesn't require any plugins.
I use them myself when I write walkthroughs for games, and need to have some puzzle explained visually.

People who use those browsers are already asking for it. All modern browsers support APNGs with the exception of Chrome and Opera for mobile. And Chrome does have an extension for that. I use them myself when I write walkthroughs for games, and need to have some puzzle explained visually.
It's really about time that people stopped letting idiots using inferior browsers hold the internet back. This bullshit has been going on for decades now and won't stop if people keep humoring lazy developers.

From what I can tell, all major browsers support it, except for chrome. And chrome only lacks support because they use libpng and that hasn't got support for it. Adding ti there would probably fix the problem for any remaining browsers.

Maighstir: Unfortunately APNG never became very popular. Animated imagery with 24-bit colour and 8-bit alpha transparency!
In at least one instance i found APNGs useful, since the amount of colors needed for a short skit was far exceeding 256 (or rather, dithering to 256 made it look awful). I've also experimented with gifs, or rather doing 256 colors at a time until an entire 24bit image was completed... Maybe you'd like it :)

Such sorcery isn't required with APNG, and there's the option for alpha transparency.

Gifs have no sound.
I want to hear the boobs bouncing, dammit.
