DaCostaBR: GOG doesn't hate japanese games. They have stuff like Trails in the Sky and La Mulana, but to come to GOG those japanese games need to be good in the first place.
Most reasonable reason (aside from region locks) -- may a lot of the games are crap and people who love them wont admit it. Could probably use that same reasoning for indies here in general too (many who like certain indie games act butthurt when game <insert indie title> doesnt make it here...)

Sabin_Stargem: I think that GOG missed an opportunity when visual novels started to get Kickstarted into gear. Developers are most easily influenced when they lack experience, connections, and resources. By ignoring VN developers, GOG ceded the market to Steam, and lost the means to readily convince Japanese developers that DRM-free was viable. Those developers won't speak of GOG when they talk to their peers.
Whats the name of that company who picked up a lot of work through Kickstarters ? (there first few were also available DRM free -- unsure about now and those going forward. they have started to build a fair large portfolio...)

The Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney series is also another strong entry in the Japanese game market. It's popular in the west and is by Capcom. The Danganronpa series reminds me of it, because they're both about murder mysteries and trial gameplay. Very fun stuff. I totally recommend them.

Steam also seems to have a lot of visual novels. Among the best are G-Senjou no Maou and The Fruit of Grisaia. The original versions of these games both contain strong sexual content, but the versions on Steam are the all-ages ones and to be honest, the absence of the strong sexual content doesn't affect them. The story/plot of these games should be experienced by anyone that's interested in Japanese games because there is so much going on and it's so damn intriguing and the characters are so unique.

Sekai Project, if I remember rightly. They have The Fruit of Grisaia trilogy and spinoffs, World End Economica, and Clannad. They are pretty good at picking out some of the better material, it seems.

Anyways, the idea of games not being good enough doesn't make sense to me. A game doesn't have to appeal to everyone to be good. DOOM and Ace Attorney are both excellent games, but have completely different genres, aesthetics, mechanics, and audience. Why in the world should a fan of only one be the voice of authority on the other?

Further, quality is not the same as popularity. Star Trek: 25th Anniversary is one of the best licensed games that I have ever experienced, and is a very good adventure game. These qualities don't change the fact that most people are unaware of the game's existence - and would be resistant to play, since it is an old game.

People are not capable of knowing and doing everything. However, I think it is fair to ask them to not readily judge media they have no experience with. Judgment should be left to people who genuinely care about the subject matter, due to the breadth and depth of experience they are apt to have.

Have you seen steam ? It's a complete mess full of JRPGs and romance games. I would rather this stuff be limited than GOG just opening up their doors to any old crap.

I for one would love a mess of JRPG's and romance games on here if they were uncensored. ;P
In a world where murdering virtual people is fine, I do not see the issue with romancing them.

Well, people do say nobody should feel excluded right?

Chacranajxy: Because GOG doesn't appear to know anything about PC gaming outside of Eurojank (tm), and doesn't particularly care to change that.
Sorry, is Eurojank something along the lines of Rest Of World?

Having said that, I have to admit that when I see an unqualified "Japanese games" my mind turns that into "Japanese indie shovelware dating games/RPG maker JRPGs/weirdo shit" all of which I find unappealing, but there are Japanese games and game companies too that I think would be great to see here and/or see more of. Just about anything from Square-Enix for example. Japanese games of the AAA variety in particular which are made for a worldwide audience would be potentially nice to have. The Final Fantasy franchise is perhaps one of the best examples.

Eurojank is a particular type of game that A) frequently originates from Europe and B) is overly clunky or needlessly complicated. Bonus points if it has the word "Panzer" in the title.

Recent examples include: Risen 3, yesterday's release of Codename Panzers, and that Kona Day 1 game that's in early access.
An enhanced port for Disgaea will be releasing on Steam this week. While I doubt we will see the game immediately available for sale here, it would be nice to know that GOG is seeking to expand its catalog to include more Japanese games. However, like last week, I'm expecting another missed opportunity. Of course, it's entirely possible that the staff is attempting to broker deals with more Japanese companies, and we simply don't always hear about it. If that's the case, increased communication with the GOG community would certainly be appreciated.

Honestly though, I fear that GOG's current approach to curation will inevitably make the store less appealing to a wide-ranging, and more diverse audience by focusing almost exclusively on WRPGs, RTS games and indies. I suppose those games seem to get the most traction around here...
I hope this isn't too much of a bump/necro (please correct me if its against the rules), but I really would like it if GOG allowed more Japanese games to come to its platform. As a DRM free platform, it inherently has advantages over many other game stores including the most popular store, Steam.

I love Japanese games. I play almost exclusively Japanese games, and especially JRPGs. Currently I've been spending my time playing htol#NiQ: The Firefly Diary and Senran Kagura Shinovi Versus. I love all these niche games and would love to see titles like that. The aforementioned Monster Monpiece was also brought up, and I fully intend to buy that game on Steam when it comes out day 1. But what I'd REALLY like is for the game to be available on a DRM free platform. GOG is DRM free. I don't understand why GOG wouldn't support these games coming to its store. Many Japanese games are fairly high quality, and even if someone doesn't personally like them, another may. People don't have to buy every single game in the store. Different people have different tastes, and I would LOVE to see GOG open itself up to more Japanese games.
I cant remember where I read an article & saw a video about this. But I do remember that it was one of CDPR more known staff members who talked about japanese developers and their opinion in the article + a game developer talking about it in the video.
Basically both said that at least in Japan, game developers (at least bigger ones) are against DRM-free games. The CDPR/GOG guys tried to convince japanese developers and their respective publishers to get games to GOG but all of them kindly declined. So I guess the issue is not really GOG denying them access to their store, but their unwillingness to sell their games DRM-free.
Maybe this is different with indies, but I have no info on that part
Wait....you mean this thread WASN'T started by Barry?
