I hadn't even considered that... and it's probably exactly why people choose videos over articles (combined with the fact it is easier to make videos then I suppose it's a much easier way to earn if that's your goal..)
This really is part of the problem. It wouldn't be half as bad if the tutorials were better, but the one I watched before writing my rant literally wasted half the time of the video just repeating the same (obvious) things..

Unity is one of the worst I find, hardly anyone seems to just write tutorials for it, it's all videos. And I'm sure that's half the reason I've never bothered with it, because I always get lumped with having to watch (and probably rewatch so I remember) hours worth of video tutorials to learn the simplest things...

Particularly when half of them tend to use an outdated version, so none of the buttons and options are where they are shown in the videos... XD

I've just read the main post here and must say, written tutorials could indeed be at least more frequent. Yesterday I bought myself a mini drone for a bargain. Nice little thing, I can't take my mind off it. Though it's hard to get used to controls. Anyway... In learning to control it, I banged my drone into the walls, floors, ceilings, lamps, myself, my dog, my friend and into my fluffy pillow. One of the propellers stopped working.

And what? I need info on what could have happened, how to fix it. There are like a million videos on these drones and not only I don't have time to look at "unpacking and test fly", but I am also rather frustrated if I shall find any information at all on the subject in that or that, or that video. So thank you to those smart people who wrote an article on possible problems AND provided photos with details. Not videos. Photos. Much easier to search for or to dismiss if it's not what I need.

So yeah, saved my time and money. In my opinion, video tutorials are awesome if you know you need one. But there could be more tutorials with plain text and/or photos.

I agree with the OP, but like some suggested, showing how to do something may be indeed easier for the shower, than trying to explain it in a written form. Depends what that tutorial is about.

What irks me more though are the Youtube opinion pieces. If you have some issue that you want the world to know about, please write it down. I don't necessarily want to see a talking head saying the same with his/her broken English, with the expletives and mannerism etc. I guess people like to think themselves as TV celebrities, that's why they rather say it in Youtube than in a written form.

Soon this forum will probably be also a video forum, instead of written messages we will be watching each other's recorded video replies. Because mere text just doesn't cut it anymore, it seems.

I agree, but some people prefer videos due to various reasons. Maybe they like to hear and watch a tutorial instead of reading. I myself like written tutorials.

I am totally with you OP, I can't even imagine how can you learn programming or some software by videos, videos can barely be used for references. Also videos especially and spectacularly FAIL as learning tool, because you can't just copy paste some code snippets and such for testing.

It is also some people's way to promote their channels.

And it is easier just to watch some video and pretend that you learnt something, while actually making little to no efforts to learn - it works to satisfy ego of people, who think that passive watching of some film = learning.

I prefer a written guide over a video guide. Most of the time you have to watch 5 minutes of the video to get the same information a written guide needs only 2 sentences for (30 sec to read).

Speed of light > speed of sound.

You can read a guide faster than you can listen to it on video. Not to mention sifting through a 50+m long guide for that one little tidbit that you actually want.

I got that, but you can also just watch the video.

sometime they are helpful, but others time as the OP mentioned they are a chore
