I want to know what everyone's fascination with trilogies is. XD

A lot of times when a 3rd game, or movie, gets made, it becomes very obvious they should have stopped at two.
Counter question: why all has to be a trilogy these days?

It's the 3rd game curse.

Look at some of the 3rd games that weren't as good as the other two...

Mass Effect 3 (I disagree, I loved ME3, but quite a few folks hated it)
Dragon Age Inquisition (again, I actually thoroughly am enjoying it)
Van Helsing 3 (haven't played it yet, but it's scored significantly lower)
Risen 3 (same story as VH3)
Eschalon 3

The list goes on. I often wonder if it has to do with expectations. I think people put the 3rd game of a series on such a high pedestal (especially b/c the 3rd game is usually the last).

Some 3rd games are awesome though.

Morrowind (I think that was the 3rd main release?)
Fallout 3
Mass Effect 3 (my personal addition, though I think most folks put it in the above list)
The Witcher 3 (this one stands out as a great 3rd game).

Anyway, just my 2 cents.

Aye. It’s not uncommon for the first game of a franchise to be charming yet rough, the second a perfectly polished gem with all the greatest ideas, and the third to tread water. Franchises like Half Life and System Shock are cemented further in our memories because they never had that downfall.
Probably because they know they couldn't live up to the hype of the second game? Using Half Life as an example.
*something about the real Fallout 3 that never got made*
Super Mario Bros 3 says hello...

Yes that's apparently true...

And what do they? They destroy their own created cult and made a nonology out of it...err...
I mean a sixology...
*slowly pushes the invisible invisible button to hide time machine and slides it behind sofa*
the last 3 episodes are of course not finished hehe...
*smiles nervously*
hehe... hehe
*starts to sweat and hopes no one here's telepathic talented, because then he/she would know that these last 3 movies are...*

That's all an elaborate pantomime so it doesn't count lol

Probably why some don't have a third chapter is the premise worn thin

And we have plenty of series that are essentially the same game just reskined

Always best to die before you become the villain.

That's my two bottle caps
Empire Earth 1 and 2: Awesome

Empire Earth 3: Shite
because the first two games didn't do very well.
Heroes of Might and Magic has 3 as arguably the best of the series on the other hand. As was Duke Nukem 3D. I don't think it's a trend.
