d3adb01t: I find the art style pleasing, but just because it's anime themed doesn't guarantee an instabuy. Oddly enough last night I had a dream GOG acquired all the Touhou games.

Darvond: Do you mean just the mainline games, or the 700¹⁰⁰ fangames as well?
All the mainline games including the PC-98 ones
Anime art style is attractive to anime fans so at the start you have a potential big crowd of customers.

Not all gamers are anime fans but all anime fans are gamers.

Now let's go back and start from the top.

Where did anime fans around the world (besides Japan) acquire their media from since...2004 - present day? The internet. Torrents are the name of the game, atleast after you've graduated from watching Naruto on Youtube, and they'll have you delving into a few internet rabbit holes in form of communities and the tools that you realize your computer has.
Exposure to PC gaming is inevitable at this point.

There's an un-tapped market that is spread out very thin across the world, doesn't have much public image (and the public images it does have can be negative), but on the internet they are a very vocal swarm. Anime games - games from Japan as a whole - became sparse after the PS360 era and have never had a presence on PC. Anime games are seen as a medium-rare steak, not something you can always get, but when you do, you install nude mods and fucking gorge upon it like the fat piece of shit that you see yourself as in the mirror that you stare through for 6 minutes and 27 seconds every morning while asking yourself, "Should I have stopped all of this 15 years ago?".

Avoid anime.

What an introduction.

Welcome to the forum!
To be honest, Anime games are hella old.

A lot of Anime games are just games with anime like esthetics. I would even consider a game such as Breath of the Wild as an Anime game then, which obviously shouldn't be the case. A lot of games are just simulating the artstyle and I couldn't care less on how a game looks like as long as it makes some sense.

However, in terms of "games that spawned from actuall Anime there aren't any games available here on gog. Steam has Sword Art Online and God Eater for instance (not to mention actual anime that you can watch, too).

In terms on why these games became so popular, they always were I think. Hell, you could even consider Street Fighter 2 a Anime game. Its not that different than lets say King of Fighters in terms of general character design. Both have this destinctive anime design if compared to lets say a western game like Mortal Kombat.
Maybe some people just don't want to play the same "Call of Battlefield Zombi Massaker Army Simulator" over and over again and look for something different. ^^

Unlike many years ago it is now much easier to buy many Anime games on PC, in the the 90's you where only able to buy this kinds of games on Consoles, except for some Visual Novels and Dating games that where still hard to get depending on the region you live in, but now you can get them on every system without much trouble.

The GoG mascot itself is an Anime Girl (GoG-Chan) which shows that Anime and Manga has always been the most popular medium and eternal.

That is a ridiculously wrong statement and all your arguments seem extremely out of touch with reality.

Watching anime and reading manga is by default the most widespread and accessible to everyone since firstly it is free and secondly it is a passive activity. Every single person in the world has interactions with anime and manga at some point but not even half of the population has played video-games. Even by checking the main anime and manga database and streaming networks such as MyAnimeList and Crunchyroll they all have more than hundreds of millions of users every month which is more than any video-game platform ever had and it keeps increasing every year. MyAnimeList specific has surpassed the billions in total. Anime by default reaches everyone, this is unavoidable.

Video-games not only cost a lot of money but you also have to spend a lot of energy into them which in return has a lot of negative effects in both the health and career. Also anime and manga is for everyone regardless of background and occupation with hundreds of different genres and subgenres, and millions of franchises, nowadays even presidents and celebrities talk about their favorite anime and manga, while video-games you grow out of them once you become an adult, almost all adults that are related to video-games are employes in companies and they actually demean those who play video-games. I personally have watched a lot of anime but never played a video-game asides from some gacha anime apps.

Nowadays the Anime industry has become worldwide and universal, that it greatly affected the video-game industry as well with more than 70% of the video-games produced are all anime related. Moreover the Mobile Market which dominates the video-game industry's revenues by a large amount consists almost entirely of anime gacha. An obvious example is Steam which is the largest PC video-game network in the world, and the majority of its video-games are anime, mainly visual novels.

The GoG mascot itself is an anime girl, it cannot get more obvious than that. The above user has been marginalizing their subjective viewpoint with backwards mentality when most of what they are saying is false.

Anime actually means japanese animation.
I love the art style (although im not a Ghibli fan)
I love the music (in some) and voice acting (hell much better and cuter than english dubs i tell u)
And the game play?. acquired taste (i love anime and japanese stuffs in general).
my guess would be that this is a form of survivor's bias.
anime games do well in the west because we only see the ones that have already done well in the east.

all anime games probably don't do well, but the bad ones are weeded out and never see any localisation and so aren't accessible in the rest of the world.

that would be my guess

Anime does certainly not mean "Japanese Animation", the naming originated from Japan but it is a universal designation for anything related to this eternal medium which manifests everything with the most perfected appearances and feelings. There are anime created all around the world nowadays, and Manga and Light Novels are also a form of anime, most of the video-games produced are also anime, with hundreds of thousands of visual novels and anime gacha apps which have the overwhelming majority of the revenues.

Anime and Manga are eternal, universal, everywhere and part of everything. They always manifest everything with the most perfected appearances. There are billions of anime and manga franchises with millions being created every year for all eternity.

The people who still try to deny the truth out their pathological issues are almost always guaranteed to be a bunch of fanatical american nationalists with backwards mentality that have no place in the world anymore. All of the rest of the world has always been full with anime and manga, it is only a minority of radical americans that are stuck in backwards mentality.

Moreover, most americans themselves unnanimously agree that their own country is the most illiterate, bigoted, racist and overall most dangerous and worst place in the world to live in, and this can be clearly seen by their news media and education system which trashes its own country and its corrupted history.

These recent times we are finally seeing a significant collapse of the american culture alongside the devaluation of western civilization altogether with the globalization of the world and the worldwide globalization of anime and manga which is a very good thing. Anime and Manga are everywhere, eternal and part of everything.

It's not specific to anime style alone, but animated art in games can be easier to tolerate versus "realistic" style character models, which face a lot of scrutiny with respect to graphics quality and "uncanny valley" issues.
