A simple question. Which game, that you've actually played yourself, has the best script? Yes, I am asking for opinions, as there can't be a fact :D

I do have my own agenda, of course. As I'm STILL writing the damn story (been doing that for what, almost two years now...), I could use some ideas and stuff. And I want to find more well-written games to play :D
The Pawn
Well Sunless Sea is a thing you should play if good writing is what you're after. Obviously Firewatch too if you're after more traditional conversations.

I watched a friend of mine play Firewatch and was totally blown away by the superb voice acting :O
Saints Row 2.
Planescape Torment. Hands down.

EDIT: on second thought, while PST does have, hands down, the best story, I'm not completely sure it has the best script.

I am going to go with Tetris. The game doesn't waste your time with text to read, and there are no bad lines in the script.

Honorable mention goes to Super Mario Bros., though there's still the famous "But your princess is in another castle!" line. I could mention Pong, but I don't know if I have actually played it.
Steins;Gate.

If not allowed to choose Visual Novels Firewatch.

Visual novels are, in my opinion, games.

Great, Steins;Gate it is.
Vampire the Masquerade: Redemption, for me.

Loom, any of the good versions not available on GOG.

Other contenders:
Arcanum
Primordia
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
King's Quest 6
Defender's Quest
Undertale
some people swear by the Prophet trilogy of NWN modules
Spider and Web
The Perils of Akumos
I'm honestly struggling to think of a game that I've played that had a script I would call good.. maybe I'm just playing the wrong kinds of games (JRPGs and RTSs aren't known for their fantastic writing...)

I suppose two games that come to mind as having good stories are the original Xenoblade Chronicles (Wii or New 3DS, I presume the story didn't change) and Infinite Space on DS. Not sure I would say they have great scripts though...
Many of these have flaws, but stood out in some way to become personal favorites:

- Planescape: Torment for its abstract stuff. Or really, anything Avellone has had a hand in, including conversations with Grieving Mother in Pillars of Eternity.

- Arcanum for its unexpected depth (particularly things like the conversation about the shape and the stone).

- Life Is Strange for its ability to make you care about annoying teenagers against your will.

- Undertale for its ability to flesh out characters and the world without needing endless walls of text to do so (the older console RPGs like Earthbound that it takes cues from also do this).

- The Witcher 1 and 2 for their complex morality/political stuff.

- 80 Days for its colorful descriptive text.

- Memoria for its well-executed twists and fakeouts.

- Jade Cocoon for its bizarre mythology. It's so weird that I don't even know how to describe it or how it benefits the game.

- Lost Odyssey for its "A Thousand Years of Dreams" stories you come across throughout the game. The simple text-only stories manage to outshine the rest of the game.

Hmm, gotta check this one out.
