Wait there's a pause and play patch!? I remember it was balls to the wall hard because of how much crap was going on. But you just couldn't beat a vault style survival RTS.

Here, I'm pretty sure this is it.

Well, Steam or the FF7 Launcher erased my most recent save slot and it's backup in a different folder (I'm on the 4th file recovery software trying to get the goddamned 64kb save back), so now might be a good time to whip this gem out.

Let me know if it works. The P&P originally came with the patch before this one and I think the new one covers all updates but I'm not positive.

wy4786: Do you know of any games which are similar?

So far I've thought of:

Fallout Tactics
Shadowrun Returns series
XCOM: Enemy Unknown
I take it you mean the Commandos series set in WW2? In that case, clearly the first one (and its expansion)...simply brilliant, challenging but rewarding. I replayed it some years ago and it was just as great as back in the late 1990s (in some ways even better because I actually now managed to finish all levels by sneaky methods).
The 2nd one is clearly a much inferior game in my view...it was dumbed down, had too many useless features, and some levels (like the submarine base or the one set in Paris) were just boring in their repetitive vastness. I tried replaying that one as well, but gave up after the 2nd mission.
Never played much of the 3rd one apart from the demo...it's generally considered the worst of the series so I won't bother.
So for me Commandos 1 is perfect, the pinnacle of that type of gaming...the sequels couldn't compare.
Definitely Commandos 2. Commandos 1 and its expansion 'Beyond the Call of Duty' had some awesome levels, but after Commandos 2 it feels weird not being able to enter every single building.

As for favorite level. It's between Castle Colditz, Saving Private Smith and the level where you had to sneak onto the carrier.

Commandos 3 was an immense disappointment, and I don't even want to talk about Strike Force :P

Saving Private Smith was fun but the ending was too confusing. It's like it never technically ended and is that big battle supposed to be the bonus level?

Also that big battle is SUCH A PAIN!!!! Digging up all of those mines and replanting them only to watch half of the Krauts run around them. :P

I've never played it myself, but it always looked really good and seemed sort of similar to Commandos: Shadow Company

Oh man it's been a while, I can't even remember the ending anymore. But I do remember getting really annoyed by the krauts and tanks missing my carefully placed landmines!

I would guess that the big battle was the bonus level. One or two other bonus levels were also like that, but on smaller maps where you also had to position your troops beforehand. The battles were a lot like the A-team : "I love it when a plan comes together", though of course usually my plans failed miserably :P

When I played Commandos 2 (looooong time ago), I never got that Private Smith bonus level working...the button for starting the German invasion was always greyed out. Eventually had to skip that mission.
Wasn't really a fan of most of those bonus missions though anyway...some of them like that one where you did a timed boat race seemed like silly gimmicks. Also didn't like how some of the main levels (like the one in Haiphong where you infiltrate a Japanese carrier) felt incomplete without them...so you always had to hunt for those stupid picture parts.

How did you get to the next mission? And I agree; a lot of the bonus missions were really stupid.

There was one totally impossible one that I have no idea what the designers were thinking especially since it comes fairly early on.

I think I reloaded a save file from the main level and just didn't collect all the picture parts...so the bonus mission wouldn't start. Found that rather annoying though.
