I bought at middle of January an original wired controller XBox ONE for PC and X-Box at 40 euros. Now... is broken (With normal use... playing Final Fantasy VI).

To be more precise, the omnidirectional left joystick got broken, a small plastic piece of it is now roaming inside the controller.

Which controller will be recommended for next time ? . In preference, one that don't die in less than one year.

Intended use: Witcher 2-3, Final Fantasy, Assassin Creed, Dark Soul. So, half GOG games, half Steam.
I thought that getting a controller for a modern console could be a good idea, but after this lame experience, probably never again.

P.S. Amazing, this is was before Microsoft is forced to do the controllers at USA, and did not survive a single month.

Xbox 360 / One controller is now pretty much default for PC
DS4 is now officially supported in Steam - and there is always xpadder(?) to reconfig it

Logitech / Razer sell compatible clones (?)

that's pretty much it

That depends a bit on what you're looking for in a controller. At this point, you want a controller that uses Xinput. personally, I use a Logitech F710, which is quite alright. Better D-pad than the 360 controller, but worse sticks. Sounds like you want one with better sticks though.

Logitech F310 & F710 work well here, and an old Rumblepad 2.
I love anything Logitech with regard to game pads.
I'll also chime in with the Logitech F series controllers. They have a switch on the back to let you choose XiInput or Direct Input modes so they are good for either modern games that assume everyone must have an XBox controller or classic games. I believe the main differencebetween the models is that the F310 is wired and the F710 is wireless.

My first F310 lasted several years, when it finally broke due to mistreatment I went out and bought two more.
A Note about the Logitech F710.

I've had one for a while and it is a good controller, however the drivers have issues in a Win 10 environment which either makes the controller:

- completely unresponsive
- require XBox Controller drivers and make the computer think you are using an XBox Controller
- Use Logitech's re-connect utility program meaning you need to reset the controller every time you restart your computer.

No idea why this is happening but many people who have upgraded to Win 10 seem to have issues.

I have switched to an XBox One controller and I will say it is very responsive and has a really nice D-Pad
I use a 360 wireless controller and have never had any problems. I am not sure you can still get them though, as the PC version has the required dongle/receiver in the package with the standard 360 controller. It is also pretty easy to switch back and forth between PC and 360 play.

That controller has the worst D-Pad ever.

Everything else is ok, but the pad is awful, registers wrong keystrokes.
Didn't want the new Logitech wireless because it have a small little adapter with short range, so I went and bought a new discontinued Rumblepad 2 fro eBay.

With these wireless Logitech controllers, when you turn it there is a buttons combination you have to hold which will recenter the joystick.

You mean the analogue sticks?

They recentre when released unless it's sticking or drifting.
Currently got an xbox, ps3 controller and a steam controller. The PS3 controller sucks donkey balls, the other two serve their purpose quite nicely.
I used to have one of these, combination mouse and controller, great idea but crappy in use.
I usually go to Logitech when it comes to input devices. Their mouse keyboard is of good quality for the price. I haven't bought their gamepad yet but I'm sure the quality will be good enough for everyday use

Also, ever considered steam controller? It is interesting input device but a bit expensive compared to other gamepad.
