idbeholdME: It's not about content, but about differences. Different single player campaign, weapon differences, balancing, movement AI behavior, missing bot name voice overs in 2004, menu, UI and more like the fixed "boost jump" bug from UT 2003 which got fixed in UT 2004. All of which absolutely warrants UT 2003 as a standalone entry. I play both occasionally, so speaking from experience.
avatar
Timboli: I have no personal experience to compare to, so must take your word for it.

It does seem rather strange, that they state 'containing most 2003 content.', if the single player campaign is totally different. Because as you say, that alone warrants a separate release, and then add to that the other differences you mention, it is truly weird. But in truth, Epic have behaved weird all round with Unreal in recent times. Maybe they are working up to something big, that creating rarity will enhance.

EDIT
I've just realized I have something at Epic, obtained for free back in August 2019, called Unreal Tournament - A NEW BEGINNING. I presume I can still download and install that.

While I have discs for Unreal and Unreal Tournament, I also have PC GAMES__Quake3 vs Unreal Tournament …Issue 21, which features a lot of extra Unreal stuff. I actually have heaps of Unreal stuff spread over many PC magazine discs.

I of course have all the Unreal games that GOG had.
as idbeholdME said. I'd add some technical stuff but am too lazy.
also!
A New Beginning aka Unreal Tournament 2014 aka UT4 won't work as of now. you could dl it but it needs servers that were shut down. your best bet is to grab a community version today.
and Fusion Pack fur Unreal 1 is a DM-only mappack. no singleplayer stuff. JFYI.
and don't let me start talking abt UT3, please. even though I enjoy it and happy that I have its DVD, I'd still go on a criticizing spree if left to my devices.

Well, totally different in a sense that you play on different maps against different teams. Also has a set final boss instead of choosing from a pool of 3.

UT A New Beginning was the now cancelled new UT game, which was in pre-alpha for several years before active development was stopped and all the people working on it were pulled to Fortnite after its massive success.

Aso have it on DVD. I really like it. A lot more similar to UT99 than the 2003/04 line. Found the perfect middle ground between the grounded movement options of UT99 and the honestly ridiculous options in 03/04. Still looks very nice thanks to UE 3 and the dynamic soundtrack by Jesper Kyd and Rom Di Prisco is incredible.

yep, it's great. slower and heavier than 200x. and with better vehicles physics. campaign is a bit too Hollywood-ish fur my taste and colors could've be more juicy.
but since the genie is out of lamp... the map cooking is stupid. no, I understand why it was introduced, but it breaks compatibility sometimes. like with that Domination game mode addon. maps cooked with Dom3 are glitchy on servers with Dom5 running, 'cuz they have addon's version and some files cooked into.
and collisions' treatment is worse. guess, it really is a pain in mappers' second 90s to be sure that there's no tiny stone or low-profile rails that'd stop players harder than walls or even kick 'em away...

Technical stuff is the one thing I can't comment on. Never really got into mapping/editing. Always just enjoyed scouring the internet for DM maps and playing with bots :D Great thing about UT games is that bots can reasonably navigate most maps, even without custom botpaths and there are a ton of maps out there.

I just don't like being kicked by walls if I accidentally touch 'em... or being stopped by some transporter lines on WAR-PowerSurge (others, looking totes similar, are passable, though).
By the way, Secret Level has got a new teaser for Unreal Tournament episode. It could be a great moment to return the game (and the whole series) to digital stores but I won't hold my breath for it.

Not if Tim Sweeny, King of the Circus has his way.

Here's a recent article where he, the king of live service games, decrees that live service games are the future; and he's totally not repeating 2004 when everyone tried to be a MMO.

Reznov64: I lost hope in GOG when they kowtowed to political pressure groups and delisted Spec Ops: The Line.
avatar
Warloch_Ahead: That seems wildly off base considering the game had licensed music and was delisted everywhere, but whatever.
They could have just patched it out and kept it up for sale.
avatar
Reznov64: Delisted due to the war in the Middle East. 2K/Yaeger didn't want to catch flak about having a game where you can kill civilians in the Middle East so they forced digital retailers to delist the game...
avatar
JAAHAS: I am so disappointed at GOG for them not being willing to continue to sell this game after its IP-holder told them to stop /s.
If the expiring license lie was true, they could have just patched it out and kept the game up for sale.

They who, and patch out what? Although I can't see how any of this can be GOG's fault when you already admitted that the IP-holder decided to order their game to be pulled from all the platforms, leaving GOG no other legal option to take than to comply.

If there is no single player portion or that requires servers, then I am not that interested anyway ... though I sometimes enjoy playing with bots.

P.S. Most of those packs are Multiplayer it seems, Grabbed them for posterity, and perhaps using with bots.

it DOES require servers just to launch.
ADD: and its "singleplayer" is tutorials + quick botmatches.
no campaign, no nothing.

I can't say that makes a lot of sense.
If the game was canceled, and not released, then how come I could grab it from Epic?
I am presuming it was one of their weekly free games.
I generally only go to Epic for them.
I guess I might have seen it in passing on their permanent free games page, but don't recall that. If so, then maybe it was a pre-release alpha in development release.

Okay, thanks for the info.
I might look into the community thing.

EDIT
9.82 GB installer file, that appears to require an account with the provider to play, with a dedicated server hardwired in.
On the bright side it doesn't require the Epic client or Epic to play.

By the way, the Unreal Editor available from that site, is 31 GB.

They left up the page, but it's completely abandoned, devoid of any further development.

When it was still somewhat in development, everybody could just grab it for free, straight from the launcher. Used to even have a separate tab for it in the launcher.

The official servers have also been turned off. There is community thing running for it, but haven't been following that at all:

When GTA IV had music licenses expired, they removed the songs through a patch and kept the game up for sale. If the music licenses is the only problem for Spec Ops: The Line, Yaeger/2K needs only to remove the music through a patch and can keep the game up for sale. Clearly there was another motive for the delisting, i.e. politics, not the music.

ye. it does require you to create an acc on https://ut4.timiimit.com/ which will give you an ID that you'll have to give your UT4 on startup.
and the ID expires within 2 weeks if you don't play.
so you have to either play regularly or renew your ID on timiimit from time to time.
I find it too bothersome and stick to 99, 2004 and 3.
also, custom maps are HUGE, too. disk space-wise.
