BananaJane: Windows 10 updated and broke galaxy and now it won't launch and I have to reinstall it
Hi, i used galaxy once in the very beginning, on windows 7 , i only used it for a few days cause i was curious what it was allbout, i read some posts and decided to try it.

I had no problems with the first galaxy under win7, but being an oldtimer i like to do things the old way , like manual installing /uninstalling games and keep track of my library manually so i never used it again, but windows 7 gave no problems at al.

But isnt Windows 10 suppose to work flawless? according to Google many users seem to adore the new windows.

I had to start using it ( very sad face) cause new pc = new hardware = new windows: windoze 10.

Anyway i learned that windows 10 breaks many things, been fiddling for >5 days now and it only gets worse, i could install the Galaxy client and see what happens on my setup, but i'm already getting nervous trying to get windows to behave like i want, so i can't risk getting more problems then i already have since windows 10 seems to do what its creator wants. :D

You can download it here: https://content-system.gog.com/open_link/download?path=/open/galaxy/client/setup_galaxy_1.2.67.58.exe

Just in case you need a little explanation for the installation process (because 1.2 will be forced to get updated to 2.0 - you may not want that):

Do not start Galaxy 1.2 after installation.

Rename the following file: GalaxyUpdater.exe to GalaxyUpdater.old -> only rename, do not delete.

You can find this file here: C: \ ProgramData \ GOG.com \ Galaxy \ redists

You can (but need not) edit shortcut: ("C: \ Program Files (x86) \ GOG Galaxy \ GalaxyClient.exe" / runWithoutUpdating)

You can (but need not) remove Galaxy from the autostart.

That’s it.

Of course, this is only a temporary solution until Gog turns off version 1.2 completely - but if you don't like the new client or just want to wait until 2.0 is more of your liking, that's at least a time-limited compromise.

If you are in favor of the old client being maintained contrary to Gog's intentions, you can vote here:

All information comes from the Galaxy 2.0 discussion thread (there are several guides & this one or others are to be executed at your own risk). :-)

Like it or not, Galaxy is a service, not just any standalone program.
If you want an offline game launcher, take a look at the alternatives (Launchbox, Playnite, maybe others). These are for Windows - for Linux - ask somebody else or use an internet search engine.

Thanks for your suggestions - i am fully aware of all of that. :-)
So far, besides that you interupt the forced update to 2.0...1.2 is fully functional.
Games are getting updated, cloud saves are working etc.

As i wrote: its just an temporaly solution until Gog decides to skip the service for 1.2.
I am just waiting until 2.0 is "better" than in its actual state...than i will hop over to 2.0-> But thats a personal opinion.
If people think 2.0 is fine, thats absolutely ok for me.

I just assumed that OP want 1.2 because he was explicitely requesting the download link for the old client.
If he uses any of that - thats totally up to him and his preferences.
If i unintentional started an discussion or harmed any feelings - sorry for that.

Hope to clear things up a little bit. :-)

My post was more of a reply to the OP, while quoting you because you explained already that Galaxy 1.2 might not be an option anymore in the (near) future. Just call me lazy! ;-)

Yes - i agree and thats a very good suggestion of yours, as those launchers are indeed good alternatives.
Thank you for the explanation - I appreciate. :-)

I know you're very anti-Galaxy, but personally I don't see any problem in using it. I have all my offline installers downloaded & backed up (multiple times). I also use the offline installers for installation.

IF Galaxy ever became non-optional... I'd just stop buying games here. It's that simple.

But that's just me - maybe your message needs to be shared with the ignorant masses? I, cynic, doubt you'll make a difference.

Yes, I doubt it will make any difference too. Do you know what, unless they have an issue, I doubt they even look here. Suprised forum isn’t a galaxy integrated discord only feature. Updates are, roll back, multiplayer is mostly. It’s certainly where all the budget now goes. And if you need help, well “use our optional client galaxy”. Not to mentioned is the main platform for implementing drm for other platforms, removes the knowledge of how to actually use a computer in the first place (see “mwwaahh, hit play no work” threads). Adds in “social” features. Promotes crap like achievements, cloud saves. Bloats offline installers with galaxy parts. Is another data collection method.
Not a good word to say about it, or any of the others out there or anything they bring along with them. It’s only “optional” for the time being. Let’s see when cyberpunk releases.

Silly post: I sometimes imagine night has a bunch of pics of galaxy windows and such on his walls, littered with push pins and connected with string & every few minutes he looks at the sky/ceiling and shouts "Galllllllllllaxy!" ;D

I find it makes life more worthwhile to have a good imagination. :)

(Also I hope you didn't find my little jab too uncalled for? If you did than sorry for that)
