Recently getting an lg g4, I started looking more towards android and smartphones in general. I realized that that whole market will only degrade from now on. They aren't making as much money as they thought they would(*cough*microsoft*cough*), with only samsung and apple making trustworthy profits. Thinking about it, smartphones can't really get much better than they are now. software is good enough, with enough apps out there. The phones are fast enough themselves. Their screens are more than what one needs, as you could not see a pixel with your naked eye on mine. Battery life could probably be better though(it's not really that important; you could just
bring a powerbank with you). While I do think it's a market where somebody will make money, others will not, causing
them to drop out of the race, disrupting variety and innovation(looking at you, Sony and HTC). But, that's just my opinion.
What's yours?

Transparent, Flexible, Wearable. 3 words that can definitely be used to improve the current smartphones.

I'm not sure.. they always seem to find new 'features' to add, but they get less and less useful with each generation of new phones..

Unless there is some kind of major break through (hologram generating? I don't know..) I can't really see any more then cosmetic upgrades and mostly pointless other upgrades..

And maybe Peripherals?

I'm thinking we will all soon have them implanted and see things with "Terminator-vision".

Nope, smartphone can still improve to the level of hologram so you can have a large screen / image but still small enough to fit in your pocket unlike ipad

Any time anybody says that a technology has reached the end of its line and cannot get any better, they invariably turn out to be wrong.

1. Software is "good enough"
Software is never good enough. There is always room for improvement.

2. There are enough apps out there
Sure there are. There were enough 5 years ago too. And 10 years ago. And 15 years ago. And yet, people keep making more of them. And people buy them. Why? Weren't there enough after all? You can't say there are "enough" apps. You might as well say there are "enough" movies by now. I still think the movie industry will ignore you and keep chugging along.

3. Phones are fast enough
Yup. They were fast enough 5 years ago too. And 10 years ago. And so on and so forth. Computers were also fast enough in 1980. The thing is, the faster a computer is, the more stuff it can do, and the more stuff developers try to make it do. Eventually they hit the barrier of something it can't do. What then? Well, then somebody builds a faster computer. And the whole thing starts over.

4. The screens are more than we need
Resolution-wise, I tend to agree with you. It makes little sense to make a 5-inch display in a resolution much higher than FullHD. However, there are many other aspects of a display than merely resolution. Power usage, color reproduction, refresh speed, etc.

It is a common failing of the human mind that we tend to see no need for what we cannot imagine. However, once somebody else imagines it for us, we suddenly cannot imagine life without it. Cell phones, the internet, Google, Facebook, digital cameras, television, radio, cars, electricity...

I wish phones nowadays would have something other than a touchscreen, i hate fiddling around with it.

I can't seem to get touchscreens to act the way i expect them to act. I'm happy i have a plain old dumb phone. Of course if dumb phones ever stop getting sold, then i'm out.

Im using z3 at the moment and if i upgrade next year it will be to z5 because of waterproofing.

i dunked whole phone in the pool. i took shower with it. no damage no issues. so thats a clear way for an upgrade for other phones.

More powerful phones can be used as replacement for laptops. just connect bluetooth keyboard mouse and monitor and use the phone as computer when you do 29 tab excel spreedsheet for work and play 5 year old games on it.

Just go onto eBay and buy a Nokia 3310. Best mobile ever made if you ask me haha.

Until you hit a limit based on the laws of physics. You're never going to have a processor smaller than an atom - or make electrons move faster than light - or generate more power than you put into a systems. The International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors says we have 20 years left before we hit that limit.

But then again we humans are clever - maybe we can cheat :)
