Yup. Clear out your crap, especially if you've got a separate drive/partition for your system or whatever.

I recently did a manual wipe on my computer (I didn't want to do a full format) whilst in the process of resurrecting it from the dead. It...took a while.

Fairfox: ...is it normal for liek thangs to take longer to process than they used to.
sorry for 2 threadies so quicjk lee togetha buuut i mean i want to kno answer

also! lets turn this 'round so its moar than just open / shut.
is your 'puter near lee full? how do you liek fix this. i mean... talk 'boot it or somethang?
The easiest answer is fresh install.
Unfortunately most people don't want to install/uninstall and generally keep a system clean, so registry, temp folders, fragmentation, multiple dependancies, processes etc. All drag a system down and most of the time it's easier to restart than try to fix.
Me, I only install something I am using right now. Anything else gets removed, including any extra folders and dependencies. Then tidy up, clean temp folders, then install the next thing. Ok I might have 1 or 2 installed at once.

Also what os are you on? Windows is pretty crap at cleaning up so you need check manually.

Fairfox: helloooooo pops

my compuster says i has 1 "local disc"
'n' it say "19.7 GB free of 1.81 TB"
is this bad? i thought 19 was alot of GB non
buuut thangs take longer to load or whatevs it does
i was sort of uuuh because i presumed liek thangs wud just work-work-work-oops-too-full
y'kno
rather than s-l-o-o-o-o-w down general lee
Yeah, that's bad. 1 TB is 1024GB, so you have 19.7GB free out of a total 1853.44GB. You have only 1% left.
EDIT:

THANK YOU! :D

Wasn't there a rule that 20% of HDD must be free to work properly.
Meaning if you don't have 20% free space then it will take longer to process stuff.

I don't think it's a hard and fast rule, but page files and temporary files and such like need space to work.

Fairfox: uuuuh windows? it is.,.. o crap how do i find out
professional 7

i wud hav to get someone to do freshness. i cant even copy files/backup lmao
mebbe io just wait til i buy nu 'piter
for it will be soon! i mean prbs, rite :)
I would really get someone who knows what they are doing to show you how to backup your files and do some cleanup. You could take it to a shop and they should be able to show you, maybe buy a backup drive off them.
Me, I suggest having at least one backup near you and one external, even if just in a shed. Personally I have 2x raid 5 boxes, plus 2 extrnal drive backups, and planning to add to it this year. I am a bit over the top, but backup can't be over said.
For now you can do a few things:
Right click on your hard drive in windows explorer, and click on disk cleanup. N the dialog that opens it will show you several sections and how much they contain, for example recycle bin is one. In general you can select all these and click cleanup, this will free up the space stated in that dialog which may be a fair bit.
Next up, clean off applications you no longer use. Use the add or remove programs which you can find in the start menu under control panel. If you are not sure on a program don't remove it. But games and things should be fine (keep your saves if you want by copying the files out).
You can also check downloads folder, it maybe you have a lot of downloaded files sitting in there for no reason.

This should help a bit with space, but only do what you feel comfortable with. It may be worth just buying an external 1tb hdd (wd ones are pretty good, I like the passport ones), then copy things there before deleting.

Anyways, best bet get someone you trust to help you, or goto a tech shop and ask them to help/suggest.

1.81 TB is about 1810 GB.

According to a simple calculation, you only have about 1% of your hard drive free, so you might want to delete or move some stuff.

19 GB would be a lot of RAM, but it's not a lot of permanent storage. You can, for less than $20, get a microSD card that can store more than that amount. In fact, it is precisely because hard drive space is cheaper than RAM that the whole idea of swap space, where the OS can temporarily move unused data in RAM to disk, came from.

Of course, these days, not every system needs all its RAM for runnig programs, so in modern OSes, often the system will cache data from disk into RAM so that it can be accessed much faster. (This is why you're not supposed to remove a USB drive without telling the OS you're done with it first; on Windows, this isn't usually an issue unless you set the drive to "optimize for performance".)
Your problem could also be caused by something that is often referred to as "Windows Rot". If this is the case, then just freeing more space may help, but it won't completely fix the problem. Fresh install is the only way I know of to cure a case of Windows rot. Perhaps there is another way, but I genuinely LOVE LOVE LOVE to wipe my drives and reinstall everything, so I have never really tried to find another way.
Yes, you will absolutely want more free space.

Here is one quick tip for gaining a bit of space fast:
Right click on the waste basket and set the size to something reasonable like 2-10GB. Myself I use 4GB.

The tip with checking your download folder is excellent (why do they hide it away in Windows?!).

There are more things one can remove but I dare not give merely brief advice on those I am thinking of now.
