Fonzer: Wasn't there a rule that 20% of HDD must be free to work properly.
Meaning if you don't have 20% free space then it will take longer to process stuff.
I don't think it's a hard and fast rule, but page files and temporary files and such like need space to work.
nightcraw1er.488: The easiest answer is fresh install.
Unfortunately most people don't want to install/uninstall and generally keep a system clean, so registry, temp folders, fragmentation, multiple dependancies, processes etc. All drag a system down and most of the time it's easier to restart than try to fix.
Me, I only install something I am using right now. Anything else gets removed, including any extra folders and dependencies. Then tidy up, clean temp folders, then install the next thing. Ok I might have 1 or 2 installed at once.
Also what os are you on? Windows is pretty crap at cleaning up so you need check manually.

I would really get someone who knows what they are doing to show you how to backup your files and do some cleanup. You could take it to a shop and they should be able to show you, maybe buy a backup drive off them.
Me, I suggest having at least one backup near you and one external, even if just in a shed. Personally I have 2x raid 5 boxes, plus 2 extrnal drive backups, and planning to add to it this year. I am a bit over the top, but backup can't be over said.
For now you can do a few things:
Right click on your hard drive in windows explorer, and click on disk cleanup. N the dialog that opens it will show you several sections and how much they contain, for example recycle bin is one. In general you can select all these and click cleanup, this will free up the space stated in that dialog which may be a fair bit.
Next up, clean off applications you no longer use. Use the add or remove programs which you can find in the start menu under control panel. If you are not sure on a program don't remove it. But games and things should be fine (keep your saves if you want by copying the files out).
You can also check downloads folder, it maybe you have a lot of downloaded files sitting in there for no reason.
This should help a bit with space, but only do what you feel comfortable with. It may be worth just buying an external 1tb hdd (wd ones are pretty good, I like the passport ones), then copy things there before deleting.
Anyways, best bet get someone you trust to help you, or goto a tech shop and ask them to help/suggest.
