The months (or years) pass, and you feel the urge to visit a distant world again.
When and why ? Would you do it over trying to finish your backlog?

Yes. my backlog is beyond what I will be able to play before my retirement...

I have a huge backlog, but I don't really care. I (re)play what I want, when I want it. My library is there to give me a choice of worlds, so I can choose the what and when.

But to answer your question: it's very random, but the few really favorite games get picked up quite often, while the others rarely if ever again.

I definitely like returning to games (and movies and TV series and books) I have previously enjoyed. And I do it quite a lot.

Of the 11 games I have played in 2015 (I am a very slow player and I only play one game at time -- I spent more that 3 months on King's Bounty The Legend and more than two months on Desktop Dungeons), 4 have been replays (currently replaying Pool of Radiance).

Sounds very much like me. I also have finished 'only' 11 games this year (but averaging one per month? That's very good for me. Of those 11, I replayed 5 of them and a couple of them several times.

I don't worry too much about the backlog. If I want to revisit a previously played game (or previously watched movie/read book), I go right ahead.

I always like to revisit some of my favourite games, especially the Dragon Age and Mass Effect series, though I think Mass Effect (1) didnt age that well.
Now even more then ever...I have time the to play games, but dont want to invest too much of it into games I just bought (dont ask me why; first I need them...then after having bought them, I dont want to play em), so I just play my favourite games or this casual browser game crap (time wasters). >.<

Yep, those games are the main offenders for me as well, along with KOTOR 1 & 2, and Jade Empire to a lesser degree. I think I've played through Dragon Age: Origins about twenty times by now. I really don't want to think about how many hours of my life I have sunk into that game. :P

Sadly I very much have the tendency to replay games over trying new ones. Partially it's caused by my messed up graphics card (some problems with the cooling) which keeps me from running newer games but partially I'm just wired this way, don't know why. I guess I've just gotten old and am hopelessly stuck in a "things just were better in the old days" mentality. At least once in a while I end up finishing games I've never beaten in the past.

Same here, I do things as I feel like it, although I like to finish things - but with games I usually don't, with books I do, when I'm reading a book I almost never skip to another one and finish it one or two goes. Or more, if I don't have the time to read it all in few sittings.

With TV series and movies I just go back to watching what I want, re-watching old stuff again or just enjoying my time having lottery with the TV.

I have one game I play at least once a year. Settlers II Gold Edition. I really like to play it even if my backlog is full with new games.
