Leonard03: I'll tell you one game I know I'll play through again. Planescape: Torment. That was an amazing experience.
"What can change the nature of man ?"

Play again.

What's a backlog? I don't have one - I just have a huge stack of games that I love to play and on occasion I may choose the same game from the stack multiple times but that's not really a backlog.

You guys make gaming sound like you're doing chores or something. It's video games so make it enjoyable.

Yes! A thousand times this!

I hate the term "backlog". I wish it would quickly fade from gaming vernacular. Catalog, stockpile, stash, treasures... any other term than one that equates playing your games with some sort of obligatory, unpleasant task.

Simple: When you feel like it. Screw the backlog.

NuffCatnip: I always like to revisit some of my favourite games, especially the Dragon Age and Mass Effect series, though I think Mass Effect (1) didnt age that well.
Now even more then ever...I have time the to play games, but dont want to invest too much of it into games I just bought (dont ask me why; first I need them...then after having bought them, I dont want to play em), so I just play my favourite games or this casual browser game crap (time wasters). >.<

FearfulSymmetry: Yep, those games are the main offenders for me as well, along with KOTOR 1 & 2, and Jade Empire to a lesser degree. I think I've played through Dragon Age: Origins about twenty times by now. I really don't want to think about how many hours of my life I have sunk into that game. :P
Exactly. ^^
Biowares franchises are just too good, every playthrough is unique among the others, the different classes, the different races, every different choice makes me want to try out another combination of those. I hate Bioware...so many hours gone. xD

It's a useful term when you buy a lot more games than you play. It reminds you that you're buying in order to play, not just to accumulate games. But yes, it's not the best term.

As for replaying games, I try not to do it, because of the large number of games I've yet to play, but I do "replay" games that I played but never finished, and sometimes play remakes.
When the nostalgia kicks in so hard, you just want to relive the past.

I dont mind the term "backlog", but I really hate it when people use the word "entitled", this putrid vomit-inducing term shouldnt be used under any circumstance... -.-

I don't care about my unplayed collection at all if I get the urge to play some of my favourite games again. I mean there a a few that I play almost every year :D
I used to be stuck replaying Starcraft+Brood Wars, Age of Empires 1-2, Serious Sam games, and even Half-life over and over again. At least you know what to expect, and there is no learning curve for the gameplay or controls. Heck, back in the 90s I recall replaying Wing Commander 1-2 through quite many times too.

I've lately pushed myself to try "new" games though, and luckily it often pays off. I find new interesting games that I might want to replay in the future.

Then there is TeamFortress 2 (and before that, Team Fortress Classic). I don't know if online multiplayer games count, I keep replaying these games on the same maps over and over again. It is basically the same thing, you know what to expect and you've become quite good at it, so you don't necessarily mind it being the same all the time.

The MOBA genere has taken the concept of "always the same but you get better" to the max, there is only one map.

The MOBA genere is an extreme case. Most games have only one map.

I finished DA:O about six times but i don't think i've finished with this game. I want to replay it again! When i'm playing games that i really like, i don't feel like i'm wasting hours of my life. :)

Gnostic: t... :P
Hey, that is kind of my excuse in buying games.
I remember an advice that was being given many years ago; "Buy less to play more..." - i think i begin to understand it! :P

Now that i think about it, my backlog of "never played" games is of the same size as my backlog of "to replay" games. :D
When I miss the gameplay or mechanics:
Demon's Souls, MotoGP, Xenonauts, Men of War, PES, Hitman, Alpha Centauri, FTL, Populus, NHL, Nexus ...

When I miss the game-world:
Dead Space, Alien Isolation, LA Noire, Syberia, Sanitarium, Torment, Tropico, Star Wars ...

When I miss the characters:
Tex Murphy, GTA V, Uncharted, Gabriel Knight, Risen, Tomb Raider, Blackwell, Star Trek ...

Often it is some kind of combination of these.

I always play more than one game at a time, so I have no qualms about replaying a game.
When's the time to replay a game? To me, the only correct answer is

"When I feel like it"

Even when I had a 50-60 game backlog last year, I still gave Icewind Dale 1 and 2 a few run throughs. When I was done, I was usually in the mood for a new game and picked one off the backlog. I've been doing some reorganizing, controlling my purchases and combined my primary and secondary backlogs which at the time of this post comes to a total of 19 games (which includes 1 game which wont run and 1 game that I'm very close to finishing). I believe a backlog of 19 games is very manageable so I don't feel bad about putting the backlogged games on hold while I replay another. I have never felt the need to slog through a game on the backlog simply so I could replay another game.

However, I don't know about other GOGers but I buy games with the intention of playing them, not amassing a large library so I'm not adverse to using the term "backlog", after all, I have full intentions of playing them. If you buy so many games but never get around to playing them, then what was the point in buying them?

I know sales can be exciting and people can get a little carried away but I find if you are sensible with your purchases, replaying games while you still have a backlog simply isn't an issue. But I do have to ask, if you have a backlog into the hundreds yet you replay other games, then what did you buy the others for? Especially when you literally aren't going to live long enough to play them all. Wouldn't it have been better to use that money for a beer or something while you enjoy replaying some games?
