anzial: yeah, those rules are very, very subjective and vary from person to person. I, for one, think now is the time for RTX while I didn't think that before nvidia's 3xxx and AMD's 6xxx series.
It certainly is subjective. This is how I see it:
2020 marks the end of an era of graphics baseline. The ps5 and xbox series x mark a new epoch.
We are still early in the next-gen-console cycle. Next-gen game engines will play to the strengths of these consoles. This means fully dynamic global illumination (better subsurface scattering and translucency), improved LOD chains, and ray tracing will make games look even more photo-realistic. In certain instances, games will look prettier than in real life.
Games like the new demon souls offer a glimpse into this. I expect that lovelace and rnda 3 will be a better bet if you intend to build a gaming rig that lasts.
