I moved to 1000k gaming and now I can manipulate time and space.

4k is more than enough for most living rooms. For many, 1080p or 1440p is suffice. I game on 1080p myself.

8k makes sense only if you are into VR. Constantly chasing after the next big thing in gaming can often leave you disillusioned.. To put things into context:

As a rule:

1) I never preorder games.

2) I upgrade in a 2- to 3-year cycle only and do not jump on the hype-train for gaming. I have a huge backlog of games and upgrade only when it makes sense to do so.

3) I am more of a laptop gamer. My 1660 ti is adequate for most games on 1080p but not beyond. Intend to get rtx only when it makes sense to get that technology. Right now, it doesn't.

yeah, those rules are very, very subjective and vary from person to person. I, for one, think now is the time for RTX while I didn't think that before nvidia's 3xxx and AMD's 6xxx series.

I care about games with 4k dialog text, not 4k graphics. Peeps can take their 4k graphics and shove em where JJ Abrams lens flares don't shine.

It certainly is subjective. This is how I see it:

2020 marks the end of an era of graphics baseline. The ps5 and xbox series x mark a new epoch.

We are still early in the next-gen-console cycle. Next-gen game engines will play to the strengths of these consoles. This means fully dynamic global illumination (better subsurface scattering and translucency), improved LOD chains, and ray tracing will make games look even more photo-realistic. In certain instances, games will look prettier than in real life.

Games like the new demon souls offer a glimpse into this. I expect that lovelace and rnda 3 will be a better bet if you intend to build a gaming rig that lasts.

again subjective. Hardware is always progressing and when it is time to upgrade, is very individual.

To be honest while the question is not great at the same time is not the most stupid, I mean we already have phones with displays less than 5" big that are 4K and high referesh rate.

8K is nowhere near to be widely adopted but is the next big step and likely will have a quicker penetration than 4K: today such panels can be bought in prices that range from 2000 to 5000 all the way up to 10.000 Euro.

As for the hardware needed to push that many pixels , yes, has still a long way to come but people who like it can make DLSS work its backside off until more capable GPUs will be available.

Unless you are on a VR system, your eyes are not going to be able to discern much between a 4k and 8k display.

All things being equal, your eyes are not going to be able to discern much, That is for someone with 20/20 vision.

Every time resolution is doubled, the bang per buck is decreased. With 8k, unless you are sitting at arms-length in front of a 65" screen (which would just be ridiculous anyway), you're spending an awful lot of money on something that decreases game performance and doesn't actually look a lot better.

Seems pretty damn silly to me.

I currently sit in front of a 4k display at about arms length (standard for computer use) and I can tell you, the change to HD (1080p) was much more impactful than HD to 4k. I am able to get away with "low" anti-aliasing on 4k rather than setting it higher, and fine detail on distant objects is a little higher. But that's about it.

I don't really think 8K is viable just now, due to the huge performance impact and having to lower settings to cope for an absolutely minimal (at best) visual difference. For many older people, whose vision has deterioated, it's just a cash drain.
