They are like testicles: Most of the time they are a mild discomfort and tend get in the way of being productive, but once in a while it's nice when they are testickled.

Achievements in general are a necessary evil. They're annoying and a pain, but they also serve the beautiful purpose of getting Jonathan Blow riled up and ranting (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WYl0AE3qglI).
They're pretty cool, I like the little animation with the satisfying sound :D

I might try to get all the achievements of some game, maybe Skyrim, but I'll see.

timppu: They are like testicles: I know they are there, but I don't really keep thinking about them or stare at them.

I guess I could even live without them fine.

Wise words right here.
I totally ignore the always online achievements as I consider them telemetry.
I have a neutral position to the local achievements. Sometimes I pursue the 100% completion because it's fun and challenging. Not other times as they are boring. Achievements have never influenced my choice of games.

phaolo: Wait, wasn't the +15s thing just a configuration error? I think GOG said (maybe on Discord?) that they fixed various titles affected

AB2012: A mod responded in that thread[/url] saying they added a new configuration timeout option for the newest version of the wrapper. So it's fixed it for late 2023-2024 games which are new enough to have a GalaxyConfig.json file to be able to edit. Problem is people have been complaining about this bugged wrapper since at least 2018 and to fix all those 5 years worth of 2018-2023 games using older versions of the wrapper, they'll have to go back and recompile each game for a newer version of the wrapper, which they still haven't done. So dozens if not hundreds of 2018-2023 releases are still bugged...
Aren't those hundreds the perfect candidates for the GOG Preservation Program? Have you created a community wish for that?
I mention this to you because you seem well informed about the issue and its long history, making you a strong advocate for the case. You would easily get my vote.

Testiclides: From what I've read, the default compression setup they use is a mess in all aspects. Essentially non existent compression (installers are the same size as the games), they are compressed multiple times which is useless, the decompression is singlethreaded, and is set to always decompress on the temp folder of the C: drive, even if you are installing on another drive, which means a game might not install if you dont have space on your C drive, even if you do have it on your other drive. Not to mention the extra wear on the drives.
There was a thread about this stuff, should be around God of War launch (due the obnoxious long installing times), or any other recent-ish major launch. From what I remember, the need to decompress to the temp folder is to reconstruct the files because they are not simply compressed, GOG used the "streams?" from Galaxy and the temp folder is used as a work folder.

Let me see if I can dig the old thread.

Any time GOG touch the installers, hardly make them better to use...

Edit: didn't find the said thread in a timely manner but this one has some pretty good posts: https://www.gog.com/forum/general/offline_game_installers_why_use_ctemp/post17

Testiclides: Do you like them? Don't care? Hate them? I'm curious about what the average GOG user thinks about them.
Personally I don't care much for them, though I certainly like to achieve.
So for me it depends on what and why, and I guess you can see them as both positive or negative.

Some folk seem to focus too much on them.

I freely admit that I have gotten less competitive as I get older, and in fact don't care for competition much at all, and achievements for many folk are all about competing with others.

I'm all about enjoying the game, which happens in different ways depending on the type of game.

While I am not big on being competitive, I do enjoy challenges. Even games that don't have achievements sometimes go too far though. Clearly some developers get off on making their games hard, have an ego trip or something.

I just prefer to enjoy myself, and in some cases, with others.

Seems true. I still have a few games with an older version of the installers, like for example F.E.A.R, and it installs so much more quickly than other games of the same size on more recent installers.

Thanks for the info
