So, I've been meaning to check back on Star Trek Online after a long, long break from the game. I'm not big on MMOs, but it's been a long time since I got to take an away team to kick some Klingon ass, or to be blown apart by Borg. So I was about to redownload the game... But it seems a lot has changed during my absence. STO belongs to some Arc... thing... now, there is some shitty client...

Basically, I would appreciate if someone told me what's up now. Do I need to use that Arc client? Do I need a new account on Arc? Should I just forget about all this and wait for A Final Unity to come to GOG (which will likely be two days after never)?

I could be wrong, but I don't believe it's required. I haven't played in months though. I have the game on CD and I remember the last time I played it updated to the latest version without using that Arc client which I believe was available at the time.

Damn. I should not have uninstalled it. Looks like my Starfleet career is over for now. Thanks for the heads up though. Cheers.

This thread kinds of makes me want to re-install STO... but then I remember why uninstalled it in the first place. >.>

Which was? I just got kind of bored, outside of a few really interesting quest here an there it felt rather repetative in the long run, like MMOs tend to be.

I'm not huge fan of the F2P model, but outside of that it felt more like a generic MMO in a Star Trek theme, rather a Star Trek game that happens to be an MMO. Some of the quest were fun, but most of them could have been made into an offline game and you wouldn't noticed a difference. Really it feels like your playing STO just because there is no newer Star Trek games that are good, minus the fan made games/mods being made (some of which are much better Star Trek games), what else is there?

I think STO is one of the better examples of a fgame that transitioned to F2P, but other than that... yeah, I pretty much agree. There is definately a generic feel to it, other than some really awesome but all to rare quests that do really feel like a Star Trek story. And it's absolutely true that I only played it because there are no new Trek games, and that's why now I wanted to go back to it again. It's fun in small doses, the space combat is quite good and as a fan I just enjoy cruising about in my own Starfleet ship, shooting at some Klingons or Borg. But it's all just a thin layer of Trek on a well made but unremarable game.

A proper Star Trek Online would be much more like a cross between Bridge Commander and Away Team, but I doubt it could gather a big audience among the MMO crowd.

This is my new Star Trek Game really lol, it's a mod for Star Trek Amada 2... but will be completely standalone in the new version whenever it get's done. Much better than anything that released commercially for a last few years...

I own Bridge Commander, was a pretty decent Star Trek game... might want to keep an eye on the fan game Star Trek Excalibur which is being made to be like a sequel to that.

Looks interesting. Armada II was far from terrible, but it's true it was not nearly as good as the first one.

I've been keeping my eye on that one for so long, I kind of lost hope it will ever leave dry dock.

I just hope we get a GOG release of A Final Unity. It looks awesome, and I never got to play it.

This makes it's 10x better and a lot more like Armada 1. I owned both.

Yea me too, but some recent changes in the development team have looks to sped up development some.

Hi I have Arc and Steam on my Laptop. I have been downloading the patch for 3 days now. I need help on getting it. I will be going home where I can get the CD but I do not know what to do now.

But besides that: If you installed the game fresh from an disk and patch now you might wait something like between all eternity and the end of time till it finishes. Doing a fresh online install with a stable connection might be the fastest option now.

You still can start the game later on with the classic STO only no steam/no arc launcher when starting it from the folder its installed in.
