Crosmando: Don't know about complicated, but the worst controller is probably the N64, it's like the designer apparently forgot that human beings have two hands not three.
It really is staggering how ~23 years on there are people that don't understand how to use an N64 controller.

paladin181: N-64. Hands down. I never grew the third hand needed to hold it correctly.
Not you too!

I mostly play pc games, i have done so for 30 years! Used many joysticks and mouses and keyboards. But i never owned a console, so if i am at someone else's house and someone hands me a console controller, i have no clue what this thing is that i am looking at or what the F i am supposed to do with it!!! hahahaha, Its so freaking different that it is like trying to teach a 90 year old what a computer is!

Of course I understand how to use it. I like having fun too, though.

Obviously I got that you were joking, I just think it gets shat on too much considering how clever it was. Sure 99% of games used the stick and the buttons, but Goldeneye worked great with d-pad + stick and d-pad + buttons was great for 2D games. Don't forget, the PSX controller of the time was just a SNES controller with two extra shoulder buttons.

EDIT: GOG forum burped.

Hikage1983: The Sega Activator. Need i say more?

https://segaretro.org/Activator

complicated x stupid

XD

GameRager: The funny(sad) thing is the Wii(original) controller does all this(functionality wise) with only a handheld unit and its much easier to use.
That is not the case. While they both use infrared, the activator only does so in a linear fashion. Basically each "beam" is a button. Interrupting said beam registers as a button press. Nothing more. Which is why all of the box blurb was a lie.
The wiimote on the other hand combines infrared pointing and tracing with the built in gyroscope thus making its function not only more precise but also different in operation.

My words weren't clear, I see. I meant the Wii does a similar job(so to speak) but better, and with less parts and less complicated as well.
I wish games on sale here would CLEARLY say if the game has controller support, bought two retro games already that have no controler support & I'm annoyed at myself. I know i know I i should read features properly but well I didn't. Stuck with two games I like that force me to use keyboard & mouse now. For people used to controllers this is endlessly annoying even more so as both games had console releases so I KNOW it could have been done.
The N64 Controller. That thing was made for Goro.

Depending on the game you could use the Dosbox Keymapper or other utilities like AntiMicro.

The most complicated in terms of flexibility and customizability? The Steam Controller probably. Properly set up it works differently for every game. All the different trackpad modes and sensitivity options alone can give you a headache

Lots more good posts.

(And to all who -d me because they have no lives, please get bent. TY and goodnight)

Darvond: What's the most complicated controller you've used?
First things first: I never owned nor used this one.

But my 17 y.o. stepson went through some old demo CDs of mine yesterday, and on one of them, there was an ad for this gem:

Microsoft Sidewinder Dual Strike

https://www.youtube.com/watch?reload=9&v=MShp4F4cUDE (old ad for the MS Sidewinder Dual Strike)

I thought, I share his find it with you, because it looks like it fits into this thread... ;)

I wonder if that came before or after that one Namco controller that you twist?

I perfectly agree! I'm a proud owner of N64 and I really like it... but the controller... meh...
I never liked the idea to switch hand position to use the analog controller... being still now and old school I still prefer using the cross when possible so it was also a pain in the ass to reach the Z button
