Far Cry 2 has some of the best wallpaper you will find on GOG but I can't get the file size small enough. Same goes for Neverwinter Nights.
Deus Ex and Thief games have pretty good wallpapers included if you want a dark theme.

Far Cry 2 has some pretty natural landscapes, but a lot of them are just "there's this guy, you see... and he has a gun! And there's FIRE!", and it's orange and brown.

Jade Empire, Pillars of Eternity, and Arcanum have beautiful artworks.

Some of the worst wallpapers though are ones that have the low poly 3D character models posing or are otherwise just screenshots of the game. Like Crysis man looks good at first glance because it's well detailed enough that closer inspection reveals the polygons and smudgy textures, but something like Painkiller or Unreal Tournament 2004 look real dated. Or have a lot of white space like Dragon Age Origins and WH40k Space Marine.
There's something to be said about the simplicity of this one from Heretic Kingdoms: The Inquisition.

And then there's the classic fantasy art from Baldur's Gate 2.

Darvond: I'd show you a wallpaper that I really like; of the SimCity 2000 cover upscaled and beautifully scanned across, but it's a nice 7.8 MB. That's great for Discord but [glares at 500 kb upload size.] The only way it'd obviously be from a game is if you spotted the Maxis logo on their UFO.
That sounds pretty cool! Are there any issues at all with the upscaling?

darktjm: I like/use wallpaper #5 from Age of Wonders 3 on my phone. Attached is a reduced quality copy.
I have the same one in my folder, ready for use. :)

Atlo: On topic: for a long time I had a wallpaper of Lara Croft hanging at the side of cliff atop a jungle.
Regrettably the only Tomb Raider game I own on GoG does not have wallpapers! :/
Seems like half of the Tomb Raider games do have wallpapers and half does not. The one I have happens to be in the ''does not have'' category. Just my luck.
I don't think any of the Tomb Raider games come with wallpapers, just artwork (various renders of Lara), as far as I could see in my library. Do you know where that wallpaper comes from?

Oh crap, somehow I forgot to download BG2 wallpapers when I backed up the game. Some of these look incredible!

Yeah, 3D characters from old games get the short end of the stick when it comes to wallpapers, if they are portrayed in all of their polygonal glory.

WHOOPS! My mistake! I saw that some have ''Artwork'' ''Avatars'' ''Manual'' as goodies and somehow misread the ''Manual'' as ''Wallpapers''.... The only one that has wallpapers is: Angel of Darkness

Everything Lara Croft / Tomb Raider related can be found at: https://www.tombraiderchronicles.com/wallpaper/ =)

I also found the old wallpaper I was talking about! see attachment

I like this one from 'The Talos Principle'.

Judge for yourself. Personally, I think it's fantastic, but the problem is I can't find where I sourced it from.

Well, I just discovered today that I missed all the wallpapers from Baldur's Gate 2, so I am sure misreading one entry is hardly a problem. XD

That is a cool wallpaper! In fact, I went ahead and downloaded it myself. There is some stuff I never saw before on the site.

That is cool, although I prefer the one with the biblical reference (the one with "God" touching the finger of the robot, I think it's a nice nod to the game itself). Both are pretty, regardless.

Don't see a 7.8 Mb one, but the one at https://www.reddit.com/r/RetroFuturism/comments/j6p9s0/simcity_2000_box_art_1993/ is close enough

Icewind Dale Enhanced has even better ones IMHO, but that's also exactly what mentioned earlier. Beautiful artworks defaced by game logo on them.

Or these from Legend of Grimrock:

Indeed, but that's pretty much a given when they're game wallpapers, with some rare exceptions like what Darvond posted.
If you can find the artists, there may be a chance you may find the actual images on their sites, but maybe not that good of a chance even if you do find such sites, copyrights and all. And if you do find them, they may be low res or poor quality, for example http://www.sassart.com/img/portfolio/digital/Aribethwallpaper.jpg
I really like a few from Shadowgate.
