Playing Skryim, it is modded, but have been playing with the same mods for literally over 100 hours with no problems, but the last few days the game will just, out of nowhere.... disappear. I'm galloping along my horse one second and literally the next I'm staring at my desktop. No pop-up boxes to say "Skyrim has stopped working," no warnings, no BSOD's, just.... gone. Poof. One second in Skryim, the next back at the desktop as if I had never started the game to begin with.

What the heck?

It's a bethesda game, they're quite fond of crashing.

That happened to me, too. Sometimes it crashes every ten minutes; sometimes with a pop-up box and sometimes without. And sometimes it doesn't crash at all.

The only answer I can give you is not very helpful: it's a Bethesda game.

Edit: And ninja'd.

So what kind of crash is that? I've had BSOD crashes (the worst I guess), I've had crash to desktops where the game will end and you will be back at desktop with a pop-up box alerting me that "so and so has stopped working and Windows is checking for a solution" but I don't recall having this where a game (or application) just... ends.
That's what you get when you mod the Gamebryo engine unfortunately.
It could be a ton of things, most likely some kind of script error.
You'd have to go through the logs to be sure.
It could also be shit left behind after uninstalling a mod.
It could be that you're using too many mods and the engine runs out of its memory.
And Skyrim has the most up-to-date non-crashy version of the engine ;)
You've reached the end ;)
On a serious note, weird, but still can be some sort of crash. I would first check the mods, maybe there is some newer version out. Oh and check the logs of course..

Shit man, could be anything really. I'm no where near an expert, but beth games can just surprise crash on you at a moments notice.

So it could be mod related even though I haven't made any mod changes over the last over 100 hours? FTR, in this game my save game informs me that I have over 230 hours in this one. I modded the game prior to being over 100. So basically the game worked fine with the same mod setup for over 130 hours but now suddenly it doesn't? I guess I don't get that.

What logs? I would check them if I knew what you were talking about. If they are text logs, maybe I could even copy and paste them here and see if anyone understands them.

That's how the game ends. Not with a bang but with a desktop.

Oh definitely, I vaguely remember certain weather or water mods causing crashes later on.
I've had a looooot of fun experiences with this engine. For example doing one playthrough for 100 hours without any issues and starting a second playthrough with the exact same setup that crashed every 15 minutes.
About the logs, SKSE also puts a log in the <My Documents>\My Games\Skyrim\SKSE\ folder (I think).
That might also be worth a look.

Ok, thanks. As for the file, I have no such folder (see screenshots). I guess I'll try adding that line the above poster recommended so I'll get a log next time it happens.

I had persistent ram issues with the gamebryo engine, starting with the game not allocating enough of it to run properly, and then reaching some ram limit it couldn't breach and crash as a result.

It always came down to the community to properly patch this out and thankfully did.

You have to edit Skyrim.ini and add (at the end for example):

[Papyrus]
fPostLoadUpdateTimeMS=500.0
bEnableLogging=1
bEnableTrace=1
bLoadDebugInformation=1
