Orkhepaj: Anyway as a good anti-telemetry I use DuckDuckGo.
avatar
timppu: I try to use it from time to time, and it just sucks. Apparently it uses the MS Bing search engine or whatever, but it seems to show irrelevant links much more often than Google, apparently the search engine isn't as advanced as that of Google.

As Google says, their search AI doesn't blindly show found matches, but tries to figure out what the user is most likely seeking for, based on their location, what people normally select from the links etc.

So if you e.g. search for "apple", Google will not show pictures of different apples or ways to make apple pies etc., but it guesses you are probably looking information about Apple products or the company, as that is what most folks are doing.

When I search for the meaning of some acronym, Google is much better in trying to figure it out, than DDG. DDG may give me some silly American organization names etc., while Google figures out it might be something more relevant to where I live.
Fortunately, if you have DuckDuckGo set as your search engine, you can just add !g to your search terms and it will forward you to Google.

There's other bangs you can add to your search. For example, adding !gog to your search will result in your search being forwarded to a certain online store that sells computer games. (Anyone know if that site is any good?)

But what if I *want* pictures of different apples or recipies that use apples?

What if I want to learn about the Amazon (rainforest), or about the mythical female warriors known as the Amazons?

You look lower down in the list where the lower priority hits are, or add extra words to the search like "Amazons mythical female warriors". Or better yet, if you don't recall they were called "Amazons", just "female warriors" or "mythical female warriors" will give you relevant hits.

For an "apple", the best search results come with e.g. "apple fruit", or "apple recipes".

I didn't check how DuckDuckGo will react to "apple" or "female warriors", maybe they give relevant results too. But it is especially when I am trying to use some acronym or name of an company, where DDG tends to fail much more often.

That's cool then.

In the process, I learned that the famous Egyptian queen (and warrior), Ahhotep I:
- "lived around 1560-1530 BC"
- "had a long and influential life"

Umm, okay.... Nowadays 30 years olds are quite often still singles without kids, playing video games and living like kids overall. By that time, the Egyptian queen had already lived a long and influential life, and was apparently ready to pass on. She was probably a grand-grandmother by that time.

Crosmando: Maths mostly
I hated history mostly, as for the most parts it was dry and uninteresting memorization of different years, and what stupid king ruled some stupid European country at some point of time. Yawn...
I always had a stubborn streak and objected to authority in all its forms, which caused me endless problems in school and still does me no favours in a professional capacity today as a software engineer. I'm always the one with the big mouth who raises awkward questions about top-down initiatives. Sometimes people will message me privately and say "thanks for saying that, I'm glad it wasn't just me thinking it", but at the end of the day it's me that ends up getting smacked down for stepping into the firing line. Ah well, I wouldn't trade the occasional raise for the freedom to speak my mind anyway.

So the main stressors in school were generally related to that:

1. Being wrecked by bullies because I refused to "bend the knee". I was always smaller than the class bullies and would never give in, which meant they naturally kept targeting me.
2. Teachers either actively disliking me, or being visibly disappointed that I didn't work harder in their classes. A few of them thought I was smart and had the potential to do better. This has been another running theme in my life -- a lot of the time I feel like I'm all talk and no action. It felt bad in school and still feels bad, more than 20 years later.
3. Being late. I always went to bed late, got up late and was rushing to get into school on time. Around age 16, I switched schools to one with a better reputation, but that took up to 90 minutes to reach (two buses each way). Knowing I was probably going to arrive 15 minutes late for the 10th time in a row and be sent home was incredibly demoralising and stressful.

Whew. That's more than I expected to share, but hey.
what did those bullies do?

In my case, it mainly consisted of threats, but also a few fights where I was hopelessly outmatched but refused to back down (i.e. "do you want your face smashed in?" and I'd always say "yeah"). I did a lot of judo a few years before that, and always had some fantasy in mind of throwing them around and being victorious, but that only worked against the smaller guys (i.e. people around my size). Anyone bigger than me just punched me in the face and I had no idea how to deal with that.

At least you tried to defeat them, that's nice :)
Did you try to gang up with others?

History, English etc were all my favorites tbh. Maths though, just something about it just perplexes and stresses me out. I still don't really know my times tables, I am borderline retarded when it comes to anything about maths. I think I barely scraped by grades wise.

Nope, it would have felt unfair to bring others into fights that were caused by my stubbornness and ego! It was my burden really :D
To be fair, most of the people I fought shouldn't be called "bullies" per se, but rather just other kids who felt like they had to protect their image because I challenged it. There were a couple of guys a year or two ahead of us who were proper bullies, but they got tired of it pretty quickly (and, as I recall, left school very early, so probably were having a hard time too). There were very few people who I could point at and say "that guy is straight up evil" -- just lots of flawed teens.

So if you don't procreate and raise your offspring, you live like a kid? Egyptian queen approves of your opinion!

JinseiNGC224: Random question for the GOG community...

What were your top three stressors in high school/middle school, and why was that so?

18+/HS graduates only, please.

Edit: It's for a graduate assignment in a course based on trauma and education
1. Outlandish homework requirements (every teacher acted as if i was only taking their course, and had one that later admitted she believed it was her duty to keep us so busy we didn't do drugs: she also gave out incompletes for a single missed assignment, no matter how large or small. Policy's since changed with her, as i heard she still teaches but has went the exact opposite direction.)

2. Teachers' appeal to authority/ad hominem arguments

3. Women

In that order.

EDIT: For middle school, replace "women" with "bullies."

EDIT AGAIN: And since you're looking for Trama in particular, I had this one teacher who always pointed out to me that her boyfriend was a programmer just like how I was into programming. We found out later that the trip she organized with us to go to france (which only a few of us went on) wasn't authorized by the school. She also preferred we call her Lauren, not by her family name. She got really hostile towards me after her and her boyfriend broke up, and she had us message her on AOL Instant Messenger, and she toko the opportunity to spout truther rhetoric. That's jsut the surface of the issues with her in particular.

1. No pocket money. (I wasn't bullied for it, because kids with pocket money liked to show off what they got to me, but it was still kinda sad I couldn't participate.) This did me a disservice later on as I had to learn to manage money the hard way, with my adult earnings.

2. Shit teachers. (I went to one of the top 3 schools in the city.) One was a power-tripping drunkard who kept getting the material wrong, so I had to remember both the truth and her version of it. And there was always a risk she'd backtrack right while I was reciting her version and dock points. I got on her good side early on but every class was still like walking into a lion's den.

3. Tracking graduation and admissions criteria changes.

4. A horny homeroom teacher. It was a STEM school in the 90s, so I was the only girl in the class who stuck through all four years. She picked me as an intellectual heir of sorts and kind of wished for me to be a slut, so every parent-teacher meeting she'd dump a huge helping of fresh rumors about me on my poor mom, under the guise of safeguarding. "She's dating a boy~~!" No, I have an [redacted] trailing me and talking Harry Potter at me. I always worried mom would start to believe that shit.
