Elenarie: That is super confusing. Especially when someone from 'murica tells you that something is happening at midnight. BUT WHICH MIDNIGHT?! Had this happen a few times. :/
I become confused with the "next weekend" thing. For some it means the weekend which is over one week from now, to others it means the weekend that follows next from this very instant (e.g. starting three days from now).

So if someone talks to me about "the next weekend", I have to confirm whether they mean "this weekend" or the weekend coming over a week from now.

Ps. I also don't know the difference between 12am and 12pm. Which is midnight, and which is noon? Or is midnight 0am?
Is there also 0pm?

There is no logic in your argument that the metric system has no logic :P
The Imperialistic System is based on real-life things, that's why it makes more sense!

- An inch is the width, or was it the length, of your thumb.
- A feet is the length of your foot, unless you are an Italian man with small feet, or a Big Foot.
- A yard is the distance an average man pees standing up.

See? That's why Americans never need nor use any tape measures or anything, they just use their smelly feet to measure everything, like that NASA landing module which crashed to Mars.

Same goes for temperatures. In America they don't need to use thermometers due to the Fahrenheit scale, instead they just stick their thumb to one's ass to measure if there is any fever. That's where the term "rule of thumb" comes from.

Was the other one called Horseball then? :P

Well played. LOL!

Hey! Since when there's a stereotype about italians with small feet? XD

There must be a reason why a size 43 Italian men's shoe feels like it is size 39.

On the other hand, I read the other day that for some reason Finns in general have larger heads than other nations, making us some kind of big-headed nation. A researcher in the article said he couldn't come up with any other explanation other than that at some point of history, a rather large-headed group of people just happened to settle to the area currently known as Finland.

And this is no joke, for once. I know a case where an immigrant newborn was taken into deeper examination in the maternity hospital due to having a considerably smaller head than Finnish infants in general, but in the end they concluded there's nothing wrong and the infant's smaller head size is simply due to being a non-Finn.

The Finnish head-butts are legendary:

This is as nonsensical as the 'one car length' thing -_-

toxicTom: Hey I need more hours a day, not less... a lot more. :-P

Also, since time is based on Earth's rotation, its units should be based on 360°, which they are, if a little odd (1h = 15° of 1d, 1m = 6° of 1h)
That's preposterous. Clearly any timescale based on the earth's rotational time would be done in radians.

Maybe you simply use different metrics.

Elenarie: That is super confusing. Especially when someone from 'murica tells you that something is happening at midnight. BUT WHICH MIDNIGHT?! Had this happen a few times. :/

At least here it is generally know that if you say "on Saturday midnight" or something similar, it refers to the midnight between Saturday and Sunday... NOT THE ONE ON WHICH SATURDAY STARTS.

Oj, world, get things right!
This is already resolved in ISO 8601. For example, 1st December 2010 is - 20101201, in the same way as with decimal numbers.

Actually I've come to measure time in beer...

Yes! We so often have time for pie. Why not pi for time?

Maighstir: YYYY-MM-DD, the only correct date format. Get it right, heathen!
avatar
Elenarie: Agree! :D
avatar
Arghmage: But it is clear that everbody find the system they are born with much easier. E.g. untill know I'm never sure if it is 12pm or 12am. But I know the difference between 0:00 and 24:00.

You can take the bigotry elsewhere. I see that time confusion in people all over the place, it's hardly just Americans.

hedwards: Well, no, not really. Putting the day first makes absolutely no sense. It's like those arguments where people claim that the metric system is more logical despite there being absolutely no logic to it.

Day first is completely wrong. Whether you think month or year should come first is a matter of perspective and opinion, but putting day first is completely wrong. For societies like the Chinese that have a long history, putting the year first makes some sense. For countries like the US where things tend to change yearly, placing the month first makes sense.

But, in no part of the world do things change so rapidly that putting the day first makes sense. It just makes the dates a huge jumble and sorting them a complete pain in the arse.

If you just want a date format and don't actually want to ever manipulate it, then it does have a sort of meta-logic to it. But, the moment you actually want to do things with it and parse it out, the format fails.
avatar
nightcraw1er.488: What doesn't change daily, I mean things like the weather, calenders, stock prices? What a daft statement, maybe we should just drop any form of measurement under a month? As for format of dates, well a brief check of the oracle of all wisdom (/sarcasm) wikipedia shows that population counts:
3295 mil, use DMY
1660 mil, use YMD
320 mil, use MDY
Or perhaps I should just wrap the first two up as "Rest of World"?
Nice to see that the British educational system is still doing welll. *eyeroll*

How many of those things that change that frequently are still of interest to people week later? Most aren't because it's noise. Same reason why it's pointless to order by date, it just makes it damn confusing to look for anything.

JMich: Uninstall KB3035583.
avatar
Crosmando: Thanks.
And block its future installation, else Windows Update will continue to install it again and again. Note that there were at least two different Win10 updates, so you'll need to block installation of all of them..

And date format works best for me as DD MMM YYYY, as in 07 Oct 2015.

Daliz: Excuse me, what?

It's logical in so far as you can append or remove a 0 from it. But the underlying measures make no sense and are Earth specific. The meter is one of the dumbest choices ever. It's too long to be practical to estimate properly, it's based upon the arbitrary distance from the equator to the North Pole which is constantly changing and completely meaningless if we ever colonize other planets.

You've got Celsius which leaves the only natural comparison point for temperatures somewhere in the middle while requiring the use of decimals to get any reasonable precision.

And don't get me started on how dumb the KG is. There's a reason why nearly everything winds up being sold by the half kilo, which incidentally is practically the same size as the pound.

As opposed to imperial measures which can be turned metric as needed and the common units are based upon lengths and measures that people might actually need to use at some point.
avatar
Marioface5: Yes, just like hours and minutes are.
avatar
phaolo: Uh no, they're ordered by.. err.. magnitude?
That might be why they're ordered the way they are, but it also works out that they're ordered by max value. The hour number ranges from 1-12, and the minutes number ranges from 0-59. Similarly, with M/D/Y, you've got a range of 1-12, 1-31, and then whatever the year is.
