antrad88: I just went over to Seriously Forums just to see the forums are shutting down. I couldn't login for around a month, so I was afraid this will happen. The forum has been around for about 18 years and I have been a more or less active member since 2010. I never visited many forums, but I sticked with this one and I actually knew people by their usernames, so it really sucks.
Classic gaming forums shutting down is nothing new, with players switching to Steam, Discord, Reddit and other modern stuff. What are some of the forums you used to visit that have been shut down over the years ?
Funny, that was the first one that came to mind for me. I checked out their discord but it didn't reach the same level of quality, focused Serious Sam discussion that the forum used to have.
Others I miss every day:
The Game Collector's Market (forums.my-collections.eu) - I was probably the most active here of any forum. It was a great place where PC game collectors could discuss the art of game collecting, and show off their collections and wishlists. Unfortunately, the plug was pulled without any warning due to "low activity". Yeah, there's facebook groups etc. now, but it's just not the same and doesn't reach the same level of quality discussion.
The old 3DRealms (and later, Gearbox) forums. These were the best places to discuss Duke Nukem, FPS games, etc. for many years. The 3DRealms community was particularly special. Both of these companies still have forums, but they switched over to new software that is very frustrating to use and lost most of their community in the process.
As much as the GOG forums are in dire need of some technical updates, I really hope that they don't make drastic changes that ruin the feel of this place. I've seen too many forums switch to new "better" technologies only to find that the old system actually better suited their community.
