Are there certain technologies or trends that seem to be becoming popular but you have problems accepting them? Let's not discuss about gaming or political trends as I don't want this to concentrate on how most of us here hate DRM, streaming gaming or "populist" political movements.

https://www.gog.com/forum/general/good_news_everyone_bargain_headphones/post7

That discussion reminded me how I dislike why more and more tools and gadgets are becoming battery powered. Sure I understand why mobile phones need to be battery-powered, but now they are cramming it to everywhere.

The devices will become useless when the battery eventually dies in a couple of years. A couple of days ago I had to buy a new electric toothbrush and throw two older ones to recycling, just because their batteries were dead (the charge wouldn't last one session of brushing teeth anymore). Otherwise they still worked fine, i kept buying new brushes for them.

My wife bought me a new battery-powered shaver for Christmas, but I stopped using it after a couple of times. It just seems so underpowered, I have to use twice as much time shaving my chin with it, compared to my old corded electric shaver which is probably like 15 years old. I just keep buying new blades to my old razor and it works great, and is much more powerful than that battery-powered razor. I checked the local supermarket and they sell only battery-powered shavers nowadays. Shit! I'd need a battery-powered shaver only for long trips, that is all.

I have also been looking for a drill lately, but it feels harder and harder to find one that is not battery-powered. There are some, but it seems they are in a minority nowadays. I use drill quite seldom so I don't want to realize two years from now that my drill doesn't work when I need it, just because it has been in the cupboard uncharged for the last two years.

And vacuum cleaners! What the heck? Do I really want to buy a new vacuum cleaner every few years, just because its battery dies?

Last but not least, electric cars. Their batteries need to be replaced every 8 years or even more often, and I happen to know one new Tesla (it is in the garage downstairs from where I am sitting right now) whose batteries are now dead because the owner kept the car in storage for months, without charging the batteries. The batteries went kaputt.

Also I am not convinced electric cars work that great in winters with -20 or -30 Celsius degrees, yet they environmentalists here demand that combustion-engine cars must be outlawed in a few years here. They don't even realize how much CO2 emissions come from the manufacturing of those batteries you need to replace every now and then.

Too much plastic in tools / general appliances. Especially screw threads in plastic that get worn out. I mean, why?? Well money yes, but still...
I don't like headphones that need to be charged either; constantly having to charge smartphone, tablet, e-book reader, laptop and mp3 player is annoying enough. Not being able to listen to music just because I forgot to charge the headphones - of all things - that's just silly.

I don't even like telephones that need to be plugged into an electric socket, there's already so much other stuff in my apartment that requires those sockets, and I don't need the telephone to do anything else but connecting callers. So my landline phone is pretty minimalist and old-school. XD
Another thing: IoT (Internet of Things).

Internet-connectivity in some devices make sense, but refrigerators, owens and vibrators? Why do I have to create an account for using some simple device?

Two weeks ago I bought a Chromecast (3rd generation) because I was lead to believe I can easily stream everything from a tablet, mobile phone or my laptop to the TV, wireless. That sounded too good to be true! And maybe it was.

I was hoping it is a simple "cordless HDMI" or somesuch, but it seems to be quite much more complicated device. I had to install a new app to my phone (ok, fine), then create some "home zone" in it with my Google account etc. And when I wanted to connect another mobile device which had a different Google account, I had to send a joining request to the other account etc.

Quite complicated if I really just wanted "wireless HDMI". And it doesn't really seem to work that way anyway, ie. I can't easily stream my whole tablet or laptop screen to the TV, but instead if I e.g. tell my tablet to stream a Youtube video to the TV, apparently it starts a Youtube application on Chromecast itself, and my tablet acts only as a dummy remote controller for Youtube.

What if I want to e.g. watch some local .avi file using VLC, can I stream that to the TV with Chromecast?
as a gamer anything that is wireless i lterally hate, so what can we get wireless, headsets, mice, keyboards, internet.
the reason i dnt like it is cos it can die out at any time and its normally the worst possible time
• Kinda agree on the batteries. Modern ones last way longer at least (my phone is almost 5 yrs by now and still easily lasts 2 days), but would it really be that much of a hassle to make them removable? I don't think so.

• Still the phone topic: Do they have to be THIS big? I know many people like them but how about some modern smaller options? Really hard to find ones with decent tech under 5"

• Alexa and Co: Online privacy concerns, public surveillance and so on always get so much attention, yet obviously a huge amount of people don't mind those things listening in on everything they do at home? Also, is it really that hard to just stand up and press a light switch oneself? :P

• Planned obsolescence in general, but especially when it comes to app support on TVs or Media Players for example, those were advertised as being Smart and expandable and so on (and they technically are) but if the creator doesn't supply apps or even removes them from older TVs for "technical reasons" then this is just an artificial limitation to get people to buy new stuff. A TV with stock android or something like that would be great.

Computer related:

• Most modern computer screens being only 16:9. I like my 16:10 ones, Id like to replace them with 16:10 ones one day, but it doesn't seem very likely.

• Separate power supplies on external disc drives, scanners, printers, everything: In the 90s we had some really sturdy, well built external SCSI cases, with their own power supply and standard connectors on the backside, it looked clean and worked well. Now you need a mountain of external power supplies, ideally with their own obscure connector sizes of course, it's just messy and inconvenient. Just glad I could scram most of my HDs in my PC case ;)
Bezel-less and oversized phones.

I don't want to carry a brick in my pocket (if it fits at all) and if I want a big screen, I'm not going to be using my phone for that. The moment a phone stops being perfectly usable with one hand is where I draw the line.

And bezels prevent the accidental presses which I prefer much more than a marginally bigger screen.

Main reasons I am still at my Samsung S7. The bezels could actually be very slightly thicker, but overall, I'm satisfied.

LOL. Just last week I was thinking the opposite, more plastic needed.

The thing is, I was looking for a cheap "shower basket" to our newly renovated bathroom. I thought this looked quite suitable:

https://www.bauhaus.fi/suihkukori-smedbo-sideline-3-os-kromi-dk1046.html?refSrc=62918&nosto=nosto-productpage-1

(I specifically wanted one that doesn't need to be drilled to the wall; that one hangs from the shower wall).

But who the heck pays 113 euros for something like that?!? I also looked for some cheaper options that looked similar, but there people gave poor reviews, saying they get rust in no time etc. So I was like "Why can't they make that from plastic? I bet it would be much cheaper then, and rush would be no problem."

However, I found one that had the right price (32€) and was more suitable for me anyway:

At least the pole is made of aluminum, so I figure it will not attract rush. Works great.

Plastic waste in general, is a BIG problem(talking about 1 use containers for drinks/food/tech/etc). Most of it either ends up being burned( countries are hesitant due to their economy/trash backlog) near where it is "recycled" or it ends up in the oceans/landfills(and then in our bodies eventually).
Twitter. When one limits oneself to 140 characters, one thinks of only enough to fill that space. The fact that a lot of companies here seem to be relying primarily on Twitter (and Instagram... another ugh for me) for customer service irks me even more.

Now get off my lawn!
Touchscreens and the difficulty in finding a good mp3 player that doesn't have one.
Connected devices that really don't need to be connected.
Google and similar companies harvesting data (related to the connected devices that I don't want spying on me).
People (and devices/programs) in the UK using American English (it's a torch not a flashlight!).
Everything needing to be like a phone app with little picture boxes instead of nice easy to read lists.

Social Media in general. I don't give a shit what you had for breakfast. I don't even care if you had shit for breakfast.

Reality TV. I just can't get it into peoples thick skulls that it isn't real. They are acting. It's scripted. No one would be doing what they are doing if it wasn't for the camera.

Almost forgot: Pretty coloured lights on PC components...I mean seriously, how old are you?

Oh yes some of those shower accessories made of metal rust horribly after a couple of months :P I'm thinking more of tools and kitchen appliances likes blenders. Anything with moving parts you know, or that you disassemble to clean etc. Those plastic fittings always wear out before long.
I hate smartphones and the zombiefied idiot culture that it created. When I take a peek out the window, I see morons staring into their phone as they walk. Even when people are crossing the road they're staring at that screen. The smartphone "enforces" (in lack of better word) stupid and dangerous behaviors while robbing people of social skills.

GET OF MY LAWN and so on.

What's wrong with 2,5" external hard drives? They don't have external power supplies. And USB is a lot more standard than SCSI ever was - I've never had a PC with SCSI.

The easier something is (or pretends to be), the less control you have over it. I have a HTPC with Kodi.
Being here on GOG should be a sign. ;-)
