Well, fortunately it's a side tooth and no one will know unless they stick their tongue in my mouth! :-)

I received an awesome compliment for my reviews and writing ability from the books editor of a newspaper, and was told he would go to bat for me in trying to get me to be an "outside reviewer" with pay (since I don't actually work there).

edit: I hate how if you respond to one post and then create a new post in the same thread, it seems to shove them together, since that second one has nothing to do with what I was replying to.

On-topic: lazy day on a camping.

What particularly made me happy today was waking up with my wife for the first time :-)

Mind you, I've been waking up with her for more than 9 years, but never as her husband, "just" her boyfriend.

I used to be "some big old fat person" (guess the movie quote). Got serious last year and have lost 75 pounds to get down to normal weight (about ten minutes of running a day and weight watchers).

Every Sunday is my 'cheat day'. I'm good the other six days and stick to my daily point target, saving all my extra weight watcher points for Sundays. On Sundays I have enough extra points where I can literally eat almost anything and everything and still maintain my weight. I love Sundays.

Sat on the terrace, enjoyed the nice day and a barbecue and played lots of board and card games with my family and friends.

The 'good' side of my gripe from the "bitch" thread:

The roof work we started on my brother's house is looking good so far. Very challenging bit of work over the weekend, but it "should" all be easier from here except for one specific area that has some tricky angles and drainage matters to deal with.

The things I like about doing this stuff are:

a. It's his house, not mine, so he has to live with any screw-ups and my wife and I don't. And by the time we get started on our own house, we'll have learned many of the hard lessons from his place.
b. He has done construction in the past and now works as Construction Manager for an architect firm, so he knows the ins-and-outs, terminology, different techniques and materials, that sort of thing. So I get to pick his brain on all this minutiae as we're doing it and I've learned quite a bit over the past ten years of this enormous-scope DIY project.
c. We get along really well as we're working. We've come to the understanding that I am intelligent-but-untrained labor, and that there should be no assumptions on what I do and do not know. And I'm not doing too badly on predicting what needs to be done and getting ready for it beforehand

I love this line, a very good way of looking at it. I hope everything goes okay with your brother's roof and with the future work on your house.

As for what made me happy today: I finished some renovation work myself today, and hosted a giveaway to celebrate.

Must have been about six years ago now, had a similar (but less scary) incident as you falling through the barn roof. We had gutted his upstairs to the studs / joists / rafters and were working on installing 'sister' joists for the floor, to strengthen the whole thing. What a chore THAT is. Anyway, we had to walk and work quite gingerly because, well, there was no floor. Sure enough, at some point I slipped between two joists and put my foot through the ceiling below. Oops. My wife came by that afternoon to have a look and she did the same thing, over their bedroom below. "Uhh, sorry about that." "Yeah, just one more thing on the list..."

Saw your giveaway and yum - rhubarb! That's one of the things we look forward to every year as the snow melts and the stalks start to grow. Makes for awesome pies and jams.

Luckily I landed on something soft (well, softish), it would have been a lot worse had it been a few yards further along the roof. I agree about the rhubarb - yum, especially with custard! We were thinking of crops that can be grown all year round and we thought we would give rhubarb a try. Apparently it grows quite well (and quickly) in the dark, so as long as the soil is good and they are looked after they should be fine in the winter months.

I was coming here to post about made me happy today then I had a sad reading the last few post, I haven't had rhubarb in like forever, maybe even 20 years if not more. I miss fresh rhubarb stalks with sugar, and also rhubarb jam on toast in the morning.

Now for my happy:
I know these two guys with whom I never would have been friend with or kept contact after meeting them. One is my little brother (47 years old) and the other is my father (76 years old). I love them both more than I can express through the written word. I just spent a few hours with both drinking beer and doing small talk and it was great. There in one thing in my life that I feel is perfect and it's my family.
