Zoltan999: Just curious timppu, what's the purpose behind swatting yourself with the birch twigs? Is it suppose to help open pores more, invigorate the skin? Or is it like pinching yourself, to make sure you're still alive in there, lol.
- A kind of "massage" to your skin. - Back when soap wasn't invented yet (or not widely used due to high price or something), it would also help clean your skin from all the dirt that had accumulated in hard work outside.
- The "vihta" (also called "vasta" in different parts of Finland) gives also a slight nice odor to the sauna.
- A ritual.
Also it is not really painful like I suggested. The "vihta" is soaked in water for a long time so that it becomes quite soft (mainly the birch leaves), and it wouldn't hurt any more than swatting yourself with a wet towel or something, maybe even less.
Since you can make your own "vihta" from fresh birch leaves only in the summer, I've seen some groceries even selling frozen "vihtas" in the winter.
I think one day I will invent some kind of plastic "vihta" with genuine odorous birch oil and motorized action, and become a billionaire!
