Hunter65536: Use Newpipe has no ads, option to play just the audio in background, and to download video.
Great! And it didn't even require root (which I've but still, one can easily recommend it to anyone you know then). I found another solution, you install something called Xposed framework then there's a YouTube module that blocks ads but Xposed is risky, it can soft brick your phone and I'm kind of lazy at the moment, don't want to deal with back ups so your solution works great. Added bonus, in-built download option for audio and video. :)

UnrealQuakie: so I turned adblock off for a day and I had adds from tampax and oranges... I don't know what porn I watched for the ads to show that crap.
Yeah, doesn't take long to remember why i push so hard to use adBlock...

justanoldgamer: I get a lot of adds for dog food but I do not have a dog. I do however subscribe to the vet ranch channel.

What kind of adds do you get on youtube? Are you a good target for them? Why do you think you get them?
Please no comment about no adds because you use a add blocker or because you do not use youtube.
none
i got adblocker installed

You should use uBlock Origin instead. Better efficiency and more options. :)

Nirth: Added bonus, in-built download option for audio
It didn't work well for me which is why I only mentioned video in the previous post.

I also use NewPipe. It's great, although sometimes video downloads fail too. But anyway I don't see it as a true substitute for the original Youtube app: you can only search and play individual videos, but doesn't allow to manage your account (e.g. looking for new videos in your subscripted channels, adding them to your "watch later" list, etc)

The speed could be better but otherwise it worked for me. IIt's using .m4a as format, maybe that was an issue? I also noticed how clean it is to not have those annoying recommendations thrown at you. Support for background playing if you you are only going to listen to music is useful too.

I agree if you're someone who doesn't use account specific features and doesn't like recommendations then NewPipe can be a replacement for Youtube app but otherwise you'd still need it.

I was able to download them but I wasn't able to play them, I have AIMP on my android and it can generally play m4a's (which I tested).
Ads asking me to signup for facebook or twitter (I don't have accounts in either)
E-retailer ads to buy stuff I looked at in their store (ie amazon)
Car and bike ads (I don't look up any automotive-related stuff on youtube at all)
Smartphone ads
Since the election season I've also been getting ads from political parties (asked them to stop / reported)
For some FTP games like War Thunder
Ads about converting to another religion (I often get these on Christopher Hitchens videos ironically enough; asked them to stop / reported)
I mostly just skip them, so no idea, really. Although a lot of the few I can remember seem to be movie trailers.

You actually look at them? I have adblocker in place, and if there something - like youtube which gives you adverts even if its an advert your looking at - then I mute and switch to another window. Looking at them is nothing more than supporting the whole advertising marketplace.
Using ad-block here, so no ads.
