So I was wondering what you guys that "D"o use or have used it at some point thought 558 a"B"out it? Is it really and truly at a point that "1" coul"D" call a final or release version or is it still so badly missing features 933 and suffers from far too many broken fe"A"tures that it's re"A"lly just moved from beta to..97.. bet"A" upgraded (LOL) or something. And was wondering what your overall thoughts on it are after "C"h"E"cking it out 628. Really looks good and does what it's supposed to do or is it still a lot of hit and miss with bugs and missing things? Would you say you believe gog did a superb job and may even give Steam's client a run for it's money or would you say one could look at how the forums have operated here for years and have a good sense of how Galaxy fared?

As always THANK YOU for anyone that does bother to answer. Seems that my posts don't get responses like they used to.... which I'm sure is a result of something I did, said, or didn't do or say. lol. Anyway... not sure if now is the time I'm going to give it a look or not but at least would like to hear some of your opinions before I decide.

One thing that's been holding me back was IIRC I read about some problems with games after installing Galaxy that REMAINED even after Galaxy was UNINSTALLED. That's obviously the kind of thing I want NO PART of.

for me gog was "the other guy". supposed to be different from Tom, Dick & Harry or Steam, Origin & Uplay. it was clientless. by adding a client it became like the corporate monsters i'm trying to avoid. with that client, all of gog's principles are seriously borderline. i could say for example, a client is a restriction therefore DRM. an informed person could say you can still play offline or without logging in (i haven't verified this because it requires the client). and someone who says it's all drm because you can't play without a computer, i would just ignore. my point is all quality is lost & the lines have become blurred. even my opinion as to whether gog is the good guy or bad guy is blurred. i joined pretty recently and had a good run with gog, but it's been a good number of months since i've left gog's store & download page to be honest.

Yeah... (and it's claimed BTW)... but the question is a legit one. Which is why I marked it such so I could give someone 5 rep points in addition to the Blake Stone games. So yeah.... you're right... but I am seriously interested in some folks opinions and everything I said in there is true. I still haven't even seen a screenshot of the thing.... I still don't intend to every really "use" it... but my curiosity is such that I was always planning at some point to install it just to take a look at it and get a feel for it. But I do know I remember reading on these forums that there were problems with some games not working without Galaxy if you installed them under Galaxy and then it didn't even matter if you uninstalled Galaxy.... they still wouldn't work.

And if anyone is interested in some RPG goodness (and some space strategy stuff too) I've got a code with Sacred Gold and Space Empires IV Deluxe. Just say you're interested in this thread and first come first served.

One thing that a game client must have is convenience. People nowadays would exchange DRMfree-nes if the software works quietly in the background with little hassle. And Steam for some people just met that category enough. Just like Netflix. We don't see majority people clamoring for DRM free movie because Netflix works on the tip of your finger.

Note: I would love Sacred Gold, but I got some games from you lately. It's up to you to give it to me or not.

I would give Galaxy a solid "B" grade in overall usability. It still has some bugs that can be annoying but nothing which I would consider "game breaking" or in this case "client breaking". In those extreme cases were people have had some pretty bad experiences, I noticed those typically occur when users are doing something abnormal using Galaxy that your typical computer user would not do. Obviously GOG can not account for every which way people will try to use Galaxy.

The UI could also use some improvements and of course some essential features still need to be added but right now it does what it is meant to do..

It's more stable now then it has ever been in the past. I use it everyday with zero major issues.

On a side note I think everyone should install Galaxy if they plan to talk about Galaxy, even if they never intend to use it and even if it it's for 5 min. The amount of people who will quickly offer an opinion around here about Galaxy before spending 5 min to educate themselves on Galaxy is staggering. I've never seen nor have had this problem and I doubt it's a directly related to Galaxy. Galaxy does not change your game files, what you install via standalone installers is essentially what you are getting with Galaxy.

So if that did happen, I'm betting there was a cause unrelated to Galaxy or some other issues going on there. On GOG forums no, everywhere else I've seen mostly good things. When this topic is brought up, most people seem to consider Steam and GOG the best clients while considering Origin, uPlay and the Windows Store the worse.

^^ Case in point, has profound opinions on it and has never installed it once to actually get an informed opinion.

After years, GOG Galaxy still do not show SERIAL KEYS.
Many newbies asked this here and there, and GOG still do not fix it.

I really thinkg GOG have no good issue tracker, and they do not know how to set priority for various problems.
The software system of GOG Support is also quite bad.

@OP: I mostly agree with BKGaming. I've been using Galaxy ever since the first closed beta (or even alpha). But I use it only for game-installing/updating and launching - and chat.
I do not use it for shopping here or even the forums since a browser with the Essentials and Fundamentals is far superior.
I've also disabled the overlay (don't like to be distracted while playing).

And for installing games I often prefer to use my backed up installers because my internet connection is pretty slow and installing offline and then importing the games into Galaxy is much faster.

Since I don't play MP, I can't offer any opinion about features related to that.

I don't use Steam, so I can't compare the clients, but I would think since Steam had more time to mature, and lots of more money and manpower behind it, it's probably better from a technical point of view. Your rants get a little boring, but at least you found something new to revile...

It tracks too much of the user behavior. If they ever get to fix this it may change from the current status for me which is: avoid at all costs.

I had a bit different expectations about Galaxy to be honest. Started using the client in early alpha stages, used for some time and moved to Linux. Now I'm using Galaxy only occasionally, mostly when playing some Windows games. I like the idea of tracking time, taking screenshots and sharing my gaming part of life with other passionates. Also cloud saving seems to be useful. Of course everything above can be done without Galaxy, but personally I don't see anything wrong using absolutely optional client. I don't think beta ever ends, just like Steam, Origin or any other gaming client Galaxy needs to be patched and updated with new functionalities. The forum browser could be done better though, mostly I'm missing tabs. Worth giving a try I'd say, costs nothing and will not mess up your OS unless you really want to ; ) As for leftovers, this shouldn't happen if games are uninstalled correctly, using official uninstaller.

I know you probably can't detach galaxy from all mentioned above, but suppose you can,
If Gog ditched every other thing that bothers you, but keeps pushing Galaxy, would you still consider it a bad omen?

Galaxy is required by developers (including needed support linux builds) and costumers (Multiplayer , Library management) alike, and in many terms it is a major appeal for newer and bigger titles heading to Gog, or even Gog being considered in the first place.
I remember how Divinity Original Sin was delayed(!) just because Galaxy wasn't ready yet, this game both welcomed Gog, and was completely willing a day one release, promised long beforehand. Yet it couldn't deliver a crippled version.
This, even before taking into consideration patching and support (which is simplified through Galaxy) is a must have for Gog.

I for one, didn't take this into consideration when Gog first announced Galaxy.
I honestly looked up for it for all the added benefits: I wanted easy RollBacks, I hoped CrossPlay be a major feature, Multi-platform Cloudsaves working out of the box for old titles, including added Multiplayer support for these titles (in a similar way to how Hamachi or Mame operates). All of these have long turned into rather niche abilities, without even having a linux client to date.
So I don't use Galaxy often (or at all), as I don't see the added benefits for me in its current form.
But while I now better understand the reason it exists, I do believe it can get better (and thus I may use it more).

edit: BTW if Space Empires IV Deluxe still available, I would like it, thanks! Not that I assume anybody will even read this line :)
