I have been looking to get into a space exploration game kinda like No Mans Sky but minus the crafting and more fighting. In space and on planets. Maybe I will play Mass effect series again I have been stalled on the first one not wanting to do the citadel missions.
Conquest: Frontier Wars, if that counts.

No Man's Sky annot 2019.

It's just so damned chill and relaxing. Maybe fix yourself a Caucasian and do a J and just take 'er easy and abide in the huge universe that is NMS.

It's ALL space: ships, space stations, etc AND it's very retro, basic graphics, so like I said, I'm not sure it's what you meant. Still, IMHO, a fun fun game.

I love No mans 's sky it is a fun game I got quite a few hours on my Ps4
Not really my favorite but give Starbound a chance?
For me it's Freelancer. It has no exploration or fighting on the planets, but there's plenty of dogfighting and space exploration. I don't think it is sold legally on any digital store, but you can probably find the CD version on amazon or something. If you do happen to play it and like it, then I recommend the Discovery mods as well, which add so much more to it. Skip the 4.86 version of the mod, which has a bug in it and makes you invincible (most of the time) in single player.
I remember The Arch of Captain blood on my CPC... I guess Rebel Galaxy would be my favorite if i play it, it's in my backlog for long. Mass Effect had some potential but meh.

Figthing game.. The original street fighter 2 in SNES or Arcade, without the bosses and extra crappy characters.

For SP: Freelancer(and also Starlancer) and maybe Darkstar One.

For MMOs, the closed yet still fan supported Earth and Beyond(it actually had some plot beyond what that other MMO...the financial company based one.....has).

Thanks for all the replies Freelancer looks great but I got windows 10. Rebel Galaxy looks good I got that one free from PSplus but never played it, Darkstar one looks promising.
If Mass Effect counts, I will go with Mass Effect 1 and 2.
No Man in the sky is great.

Mass Effect is for little girls. :P

Astrox Imperium is ain't bad.

Star Control: Origins, is not bad as well, bot not worth the full price.

Starpoint Gimini Warlords is quite fun.

there's also other games, but I haven't played those yet:

Rebel Galaxy

Everspace

The game still works on Windows 10, but it needs some tweaking. As for Darkstar One, I remember being disappointed by it.

Look at Starpoint Gemini and EVERSPACE, here on GOG, and also this similar thread.

Edit: Forgot to mention. It's always good practice to check PCGamingWiki before installing a game.

Definitely Freelancer, but I've not played a lot from the genre. SPAZ is pretty good as well, gameplay-wise, but it's sorely lacking in the story department unfortunately.
