Despite what they say about the fourth movie, that is also named with the same title, critics and analysts say that this book inspired either ALL PotC movies, or the first one of them more...

Coelocanth: Nice! +1 I was completely unaware of this book. Something I'm going to have to check into. :)
I am sure i repeat it for a second time already, but this book, find it and find it, read it and read it! It is the main source of inspiration for BOTH monkey island and pirates of the Caribbean! A must read for good ol pirates!
I wanted to point out that FOUR movies have been mentioned in this thread that were by Stanley Kubrick. He is BY FAR the best director EVER as far as I know. All of his movies are masterpieces. I hate what Spielberg did to A.I.
Master of All Classes 2 with Jackie Chan.

It's one of my guilty pleasures as well :) I don't get the hate towards it, I thought it was good.

Alien. Its the most perfect movie ever, from cinematography to effects to writing to character development.

Just recently got the bluray of it and other than the opening credits I was like a kid in a candy shop.
ZARDOZ
For me this would be a pretty close race between Tokyo Godfathers and Dead Man.

Parasitius: Aliens.

You're on the express elevator to hell...... GOING DOWN.
I second this movie. Action packed and even some comedy thrown in.

Only bad thing is "they mostly come out at night....mostly"
Always prefer horror and sci-fi movies. This is list of my favorites:
Deranged (1974), Alien (1979), The Thing (1982), The Evil Dead (1981), Saw (2004) and The Human Centipede (2009).
The Shawshank Redemption.
It's Nr. 1 on IMDb's Top 250 list for a reason.
