dtgreene: And here I am, saying that the decline of the series started with FF6 (that is, FFVI).

TheMonkofDestiny: It's probably an opinion on par in terms of popularity as my own I'd imagine. You just drew a line before the modern titles. I love VIII too much to do that to myself though.

I played the PC port of the DS remake of IV though and found myself not disliking it, surprisingly. I'm not a huge fan of the art style compared to the sprites I grew up with but it's something I can live with. I was even surprised to find I didn't hate the inclusion of voice acting in the cutscenes.
From my understanding, the main differences between the versions are:
Steam/Smartphone version (I don't consider games only available on DRM-encumbered stores to be true PC releases) has an added difficulty setting that makes the game easier (the original DS difficulty, which is still available on the later versions, is sometimes rather unfair in its difficulty; the CPU battle, for example).
DS version has an added customizable summon known as Whyt, who replaces Rydia for 3 turns and can be given custom abilities. My favorite use for Whyt is to give it a healing spell and no other abilities, turning it into a healing summon that's more reliable than Asura. (One of the 2 ways I like to have Rydia heal, the other being to give her Bardsong, as she is the best character to get that particular augment.)

fr33kSh0w2012: Oh and Risen although a LOT of people hated that series ?!?
I just found Risen annoying to get my head around, not to mention you have to join a specific faction in order to be a mage. Not sure.

Those games were ok, but I found them to be too simplistic and love the newer ones a bit better(of course I also think games as a new form of cinematic storytelling is a good thing, so take that for what you will).

??? I never had to join a faction to be a mage, Weird, Then again I didn't get far enough in the game.

Yeah, I know about the changes. Never really bothered me too much since I never owned a DS. For me, the point of differentiation lays on the old US SNES release and the PC port of the remake (the other versions on different consoles and slapped into combo packages/etc. I didn't own either the games or the consoles or handhelds themselves so they're not a reference point, regardless of whether they were good or not).

I expected to honestly hate the remake, less because of the stigma "remake" carries with it and more for just how dramatic the changes are between it and the SNES version I was more familiar with. At the end of my time playing it, the biggest thing I still have trouble with is the art style. I just like the sprites better than I do the polygonal models but that's been true of most games I've played that shift out of sprite-based art into full 3D, unfortunately. Sprites just have more of a touch of personality, to my mind at least. Even if they can't accomplish what 3D models can.

What do you think we're playing them on?
Re. the OP. . . I gotta go with the Soul Reaver and Legacy of Kain series.
That's a difficult question. How am I suppose to pick one from Age of Empires, Heroes of Might and Magic, Civilization, and Total War?
Not sure how Command and Conquer (up to 3 naturally) slipped my mind
The Witcher or Bioshock

Also noteworthy
TES (from Morrowind on, and heavily modded)
Blackwell series (this could include Unavowed - same universe)

If you count two games as "series":

System Shock
Baldur's Gate (although ToB was originally planned as BG3)
Freespace

and from ye olde days:
Turrican (Amiga)

StingingVelvet: What do you think we're playing them on?
Potatoes, obviously.

(Also aren't smart phones also PCs as well? So even if we were playing games on smart phones they'd still be PCs)

Also Red Alert 1(and maybe 2), and also Renegade for the cheese factor.

That's a weird typo. You typed 'maybe' instead of 'definitely' :)
Hm several. Bioshock, Deus Ex (-2), Marathon, Witcher, Mass Effect, Stalker... Most influential one for me was probably the Myst series (up to 4), own the books, love the soundtracks and they also got me into 3D modelling.

Wing Commander

It was my first gaming obsession. GOG allowed me to play it again from the beginning.

Half Life comes second, although the complete loss of closure since HL2:EP2 has soured the experience.
