This game had an outstanding soudtrack, so good it was even released on CD (or was the soundtrack released before the game itself? Hm... that might be a hint). The game itself was so-so though.

Come to think of it, that screenshot might be a bit hard. So here are some more hints:
The soundtrack to the game is actually more well known than the game itself. You have probably heard at least parts of it at some point.

The game actually shares intro with a totally different game (a strategy game, to be more precise). The two games were not released on the same system.

There have been plenty of movies based on the same source that the thing that this game is based on was based on. (If that sounded confusing, you read it right) To my knowledge, only one was actually faithful to its source material.
3h has passed since my last batch of hints, so here is another one:
This is NOT a PC game. A PC game exists that shares name with this one though (and also a ZX spectrum game).

Take a look at the name of the screenshot.

There was a very low chance of them coming, but here they are.

1) From the name Jeff, possibly Jeff Wayne.
2) "The chances of anything coming from Mars are a million to one, but still they come!"
3) The war scene with what appears to be a tripod walker in the distance.

From these I'd say "War of the Worlds", but I'm not familiar with the game.

That is correct. The full name of the game is "Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds", and the screenshot is from the PS1 game.

Leroux: Hm, I think I already have a Clonk game in my freeware collection and never actually gave it a try ... Maybe I should look into it.
It's a ton of fun with a friend!
Though try split-screen. I played it with my girlfriend for a bit and the lag was horrendous. Then again, her internet was horrendous.

Is that some double entendre? ;-P
C'mon guys! We have a role playing game!

The general style of the screenshot reminds me of Blood Omen.

It isn't sorry!
Hmm, looks kinda like the beginning of Ultima Underworld, though I know that not even close.
They share the same prospective :)
