So I was wondering. There are obviously many great games on GOG. But which one is the most iconic? Which one is so iconic that you can't help but smile whenever you think about it?

No-one can tell you really. It would require a vote ... and even then.

For many it will be down to personal choice of a favorite.

My vote would be for Quake.
But I also recognize that there are a lot of other games here, that have a lot more to them.

Perhaps you should explain what you mean about iconic.

Especially as many games can be iconic for different reasons.

You are making the wrong assumption that an iconic game would make people smile. A game can be iconic, but you don't need to like it at all. On the other hand, if you are asking about favourite games, even the worst games are someone's favourites for some reason.


But if you want a specific product, let's say Leisure Suit Larry collection.

It's a good piece of gaming history, those are Good Old Games, it's from Sierra which was the biggest software house at one point in time, it has parser-driven games and point-and-click games, both of which were the most popular genre in their own time for a short while, and they come from a time when games were simply fun without any concerns about being politically (or otherwise) correct.

I suppose you could consider some Ultima collection or something like that too, but I think LSL is a better choice. If the original Monkey Island games were available here, it would be an easy and obvious choice, but as they are not... well... not happening then.

I'd have to go with either The Witcher 1 (or Enhanced Edition, I guess) or Fallout 1.

Fallout 1 was what brought me to the store in the first place all those years ago. The Witcher was kind of a standout since it was a modern game back when GOG was only oldies, and obviously CDPR's big game at the time.

Honestly, a lot of those old CRPGs feel pretty "iconic" as far as GOG is concerned - Baldur's Gate, Planescape Torment, Arcanum, Divine Divinity, etc. Those games had basically disappeared into the ether until GOG brought them back digitally.

Diablo, obviously.

Taken like that, probably, but some may argue that it should be Witcher 3 since it's the far more praised and better known of the series.
It would make more sense if The Witcher would have been available on GOG since release, but it was only added in 2011. Out of the games available when GOG launched, the Fallout series makes sense. Personally couldn't stand it, but based on notability, yeah. Would go for Fallout 2 though.

As for a personal pick out of the games available when GOG launched, Gothic. But that's just based on personal preference, not general notability and praise, on which counts, yeah, Fallout 2.

We all know the best game on GOG is Baldur's Gate but the most iconic?

Either that or Heroes of Might and Magic 3, that is widely recognized as the best version.

Tbh, I didn't like it either. I'd never played it prior to buying the game on GOG but wanted to try it given all the praise it had gotten over the years. I tried 2 or 3 times to get into it, but I've never enjoyed it.

Still iconic, though, for whatever that's worth.

Far too many to list as far as I'm concerned. Depending on genre, I can name iconic games in each one.

For me though, it would have to be the Thief series. Well, 1, 2, and 3 anyway. And if I had to pick one of those, Thief 2: The Metal Age.

Assuming Iconic means 'it defined an icon' / 'defined a vision':

The Witcher: Enhanced Edition, defined CDPR and the franchise for what it is today and it helped CDPR become what it has become.
CDPR and GOG being what they're "together", my vote is for The Witcher: Enhanced Edition.

As Half Life universe (Portal, Counter Strike, Left 4 Dead etc), are for Valve/Steam, The Witcher series and games are for CDPR/GOG.

To me, it is what defines GOG in many ways.
'The Witcher' is weird, but charming, niche and loveable, but complex and troublesome, defined a generation with an amazing new gaming franchise, but some would say it "failed" in many past expectations for its future direction.

This defines GOG very well as a whole too, in my opinion.

The only correct answer is Tetris. Whenever some publication makes a list of the greatest video games ever Tetris is always on the list and usually at the #1 spot. Unfortunately, Tetris isn't available for purchase on GOG, but that's going to be rectified.
