Basically, if the Denuvo authentication servers go down for whatever reason - good luck playing your game.

I've also heard that some implementations have included an activation limit. Meaning that you can only install that game so many times. And sometimes a computer or OS upgrade will trigger another activation.

Denuvo and performance really depends. Done correctly, there should be zero performance hit as the authentication check should be running during "run once" portions of the code. In which case, only load times would increase. But apparently, mistakes have been made where the checks occur in the regular running of the code. It should be noted that some of the FPS estimates are not apples to apples comparisons either. Denuvo has been compared between patches to remove it, those patches have also included other optimizations, so it's unclear whether there was any true performance hit or not. But there is the possibility that a developer intentionally includes it in a part of the code which (hopefully) only runs occasionally, with the thought it might make it harder to bypass. In which case, it might impact even in game performance somewhat.

But overall...
1) Risk of authentification servers being down (or going down forever). Meaning one cannot play the game.
2) Poor implementation leading to performance loss.
3) Potential for limited activations.
4) Incompatibility with virtual machines meaning a game cannot be run on a Mac or with Linux.

It's not pleasant.
I'm surprised no one's brought this up...

What happens when a game is no longer officially patched/supported and stops running on newer OS's?

What happens if the actual coding is garbage because a studio is lazy or incompetent?

All those PC games that have been fixed by the community? With anti-tamper software like Denuvo active, those games can no longer be fixed, they're forced to remain in a shitty state.
Denuvo requires an internet connection every now and then to "refresh" your license. Google "Denuvo Codefusion".

Ps: I remember an interesting thread about it on NeoGAF called "Are we putting the keys to PC gaming in the hands of an unknown third party?". It should still be there.

Also: give a look at this

I dont think its fair to say there is no performance issues with having a top end config for playing denuvo protected game, If a person who bought the game meets the said minimum system requirements for the game and there is a performance issues after because of then denuvo , you can expect people to be angry.

I was reading the deus ex mankind divided , constructor , syberia 3 steam forums and players who bought the game were suffering with performance issues for ages after launch. even now although these games go for almost 80% off in sales no wont bother with it because of denuvo.

The moment the game is cracked they should remove the anti tamper from the game like most devs do.

Elmofongo: So please answer to me with absolute clarity as a laymen, why is Denuvo bad?
Because it's having unwanted software on your computer which worms it's way into your registry in the same way a rootkit behaves. It wouldn't matter if Denuvo (or any DRM for that matter) had absolutely no effect on performance and did absolutely nothing to your system, it's still bad because it's having something inside your computers' system that you don't want there, same reason people use CCleaner to get rid of registry crap.

Games have had performance issues since long before Denuvo existed though. It's easy, and even desirable to blame Denuvo for this since people want Denuvo gone because it keeps them from being able to pirate the game. Just look at Jurassic World Evolution which has already gone a month without getting cracked.

Not denying there haven't been performance issues, though the big ones we know of appear to have been because of poor implentation.

Elmofongo: Also, question about you, did you go by the name of Big_Boss here?

I am only basing the fact that you are from Italy and Big_Boss was from Italy.
No. I always use my nickname Lief or LiefLayer and, of course, there are many italian on gog.

Strijkbout: Okay, once more I will repeat it for you.

It has been scientifically proven that Dunovo heightens estrogenlevels by males, which makes brests to form.

DRM-free on the other hand will grow hair on your chest.
So if you do both, you'll have hairy manboobs? Oh great...

I don't know (nor care) what others have already said, but my understanding, which may be incorrect, is that Denuvo is not the actual DRM per se ("perse", by the way, is "arse" in Finnish, just so that you know. So like "My arse is itching." =" "Persettäni kutittaa.").

My understanding is that the main point of Denuvo (from now on, "perse") is to protect the actual DRM within, make it harder to remove or crack the actual DRM. So in the case of the Shenmue games, it might be the actual DRM is e.g. Steam CEG, but there is Perse on top of it to make it harder to crack it.

I have no idea of the performance losses, but naturally it is bad for the archiving purposes if Perse was so successful that a simple DRM would become uncrackable, and also AFAIK Perse also makes rest of the game "unmoddable", besides the modding tools the developer is offering. So just like the DRM becomes uncrackable(?), the rest of the game code also becomes "unaltererable". Think of e.g. all the modificiations people have made for games like Morrowind, Oblivion, Doom etc.

On the other hand, apparently Perse isn't luckily quite uncrackable after all even though that one Chinese cracking group already claimed so at one point, and also luckily many publishers seem to throw it away after some time, for reasons unknown.

As far as I know it only prevents .EXE tampering. Windows 10 store UWP is the contained one.

that's only true for the very first versions of Denuvo, all newer versions are by themselves a full blown DRM with own authenfication servers which it has to connect to regulary.
Monday my parent's had an issue with their Office 365 subscription which had lapsed so I decided to use my Office 2016 key I purchased back in 2015. Entered the key and tried to activate online multiple times with no luck. Finally tried the phone number, after waiting 30 minutes I was told there was an issue with the activation servers. This is Microsoft fricking Office in 2018 and they are having issues with their activation servers..... They have their magical cloud now the activation servers should never go down or be down for 5mins tops. Finally 2hrs later it was able to activate. This is why I don't use anything that requires activation or perform workarounds to eliminate the activation. The companies making these products that require activation do not care about their "consumers", they don't care about their software nor the time the "consumer" wastes trying to get the software to work.

Denuvo has always had its own Codefusion authentication servers, since Lords of the Fallen
