Symphony8: Both Galaxy and the game have still been running (technically) while in sleep mode. Presumably Galaxy is reporting the hours based on when you started playing and when the game is terminated.
Yepp, however it would be rather easy to detect that the computer went to sleep and to subtract the time while it was in sleep mode.

This would require Galaxy keeping track of when your computer goes into sleep mode. I'm pretty sure alarm bells start ringing somewhere at that thought.

Why? It's a really simple. There is a message broadcast with PBT_APMSUSPEND every time windows goes to sleep. They can simply start a timer there or stop their timer.

Because it's tracking user behaviour, beyond just playing the game.

Ah come on, that's just bull****. They don't need to log the "behavior" anywhere, just stop the counter when the PC is in sleep. It's really easy.
Anyway, apparently there is a bug open for this, so maybe it'll get fixed sometime.

White_Barry: Why is it depressing?
avatar
aristotle61: It's depressing to see how much time I spent playing a video game. You know, as opposed to spending that time on something a little more productive. If I don't see the time, I can delude myself into thinking it's not that much. :)
So it could prevent you from deluding yourself. That's good, isn't it?

I personally don't care about that either, but given where we are I'm sure there's going to be some who wouldn't be happy with it.

Wow. That's pretty bored.

It depends on how you look at it. It sounds good, but then I might not allow myself to spend much time on playing games.(Facetious)

Yeah, it's kind of interesting. Cognitive disonance and all that.
Doesn't make any sense to me to total the time from all games. Rather than report the time played, I think they ought to divide the money spent by the time played, either minutes or hours. Per game. In that way, we could see what a game is really worth to us, individually. But no point sharing that with the world, it's a waste of trivia to anybody else.

A total for achievements also doesn't make any sense to me, but then again achievements aren't interesting to me at all. Makes the game feel like a test, a test of whether I can jump through the hoops of someone else's interests rather than my own. A game feels empty if only its "approved" achievements are declared worthwhile noting, like everything else in between is just filler. Such achievements are like saying "why bother doing anything else in the game". Or "good job clicking the 'next' button". Not that there are 'next' buttons, but sometimes that's what achievements feel like. Though sometimes achievements detract from the story itself, like making fun of the game itself. And again, what's a lump sum matter to anyone else, why share that with the world?

And a total of all games owned? Why? I mean, I don't even bother to count the number of licks to the center of a Tootsie Roll Pop anymore.

Anyway, I don't know why they bother showing those numbers, totals lumping together results from all games. Maybe that's useful for GOG when combining everybody's, but I don't find those useful for myself.

I really don't know what is going on with the profiles, they aren't even editable. It's like someone else made the profile. So why would someone else's interests about me matter to me? Why would someone else's interests about me matter to anyone else in the world? Those profiles are just weird. I don't know why GOG let us know they had made profiles about us, let alone tell the whole world they made profiles about us. Just weird.

I'm going to stick with my original thoughts on the matter. GOG wants to keep up with Steam. Steam had a client, GOG didn't. Steam had gaming profiles, GOG didn't. How long before we see a "Recommended For You" section on the main page that suggests you buy games that you hate?

Mr.Mumbles: I actually would make use of my profile if I had the ability to control what activity was posted on the page. Right now it just feels like a ridiculous amount of random clutter. Do I really care about showing off hours-played milestones and achievements? Nope. Sure, I can manually remove that stuff, but that is just beyond tedious.
This is my sentiment. I want to use it, but can't-won't since I have no granular control over what's there.

I don't know anything about Steam, other than years ago it wanted me to download and run an application in order to download and run an application, so I decided not to download anything at all. Sort of like treating a game application as if it were a document, and then using another application to open it. Already too many hoops to jump through on a computer, so I wasn't interested. Same reason I never bother with Adobe applications anymore either (but they were even worse with download/run then download/run then download/run etc.).

As for "Recommended For You", GOG already has that in their major sales, like in this year's Summer Sale. As for anything else, none of it is original. I can't believe Steam came up with those things first when I've seen similar elsewhere (iTunes, Facebook, MySpace, etc.).

It could be they're just bored, and are simply trying out something different for themselves, something that seems interesting to them (the software developers they have). Of course it's going to seem familiar, and I don't think it has to be original. Useful to me would be nice, but it won't be because I'm not consulted, so it's most fitting for them instead. That's just the way it is with products and software and anything done by anybody else making something generic.

Regardless, that doesn't mean I'm going to put up with it when I don't have to, so it's a good thing this is all optional on their end because otherwise I'll just make it optional by not using anything at GOG at all.
