Every dam time there's a Windows Update my games get screwed up. I am so dam tired of this that I could scream. Out. Loud. A lot. With language that would make a sailor proud. Or embarrassed.

I've been playing Fallout 4 for HOURS every single day the past two weeks at least. No problems. Nothing. Nada. Windows Update. Now when I'm playing Fallout 4 (same EXACT everything as when I played it yesterday... same laptop... same monitor... same settings... yada yada yada only thing changed was a fucking Windows Update) my screen ...... I dunno how to describe it.... it's like it's split in two and it... moves. lol

It's hard to explain but imagine instead of one screen with everything moving there are two... a top half and a bottom half. Now when they move in sync.. you would never know there were two screens.... but now... today... they aren't in sync. The top half of the screen is a little "off" from the bottom half and it plays wicked games on your eyes. Can't even focus on the written stuff if it's in the very middle of the screen. WTF?? I've never even HEARD of such a thing.

So I quit that and go to another I've been playing and THAT ONE won't even start.

Gaming since the 80's on computers and it looks like my time is near an end because I am to the point now where I'm just going to get a console and live with whatever games are available with that than deal with this CONSTANT bullshit.

Sounds like an issue with your graphic driver; have you tried updating / re-installing it ?
Windows 10? I've just tried to update my system and there aren't any new updates available, last one was c++ 2005 sp1 on 18.02.
I agree, sounds like a graphics driver issue. Try update that before laying blame on Win10. FYI I haven't got any new updates either.

I dunno, all I do know is this. Last night when I powered down, the blue screen came up saying "Preparing for updates please do not turn off your computer" (quote is probably not exact as it's from memory). Is it possible to get that message in error?

Also, too, this morning when I powered on it did the usual "finishing updates" or whatever the hell it does.

Or instead of an error is it possible mine just now did the 18.02 one you spoke of? That seems too long ago to me but wondering if it's possible.

graphics driver issue on the same day of a windows update... nah... I'll keep blaming Win10 thank you very much or if you prefer me to be specific I'll blame the update for the graphics driver issue if that's what it is.

Sounds a bit like diagonal tearing... is this what you're seeing?

It's a lot like that except instead of the diagonal line it's a line straight across the screen left to right. And man it makes things buggy to look at lol. You almost see "two" of everything close to where that line is. It's hard to explain (for me anyway) so maybe I'm not making sense. Of course me not making sense is a bit like rain being wet.
Any chance you could post a screenshot showing the issue?

(If the issue doesn't show up in a screenshot, that might be worth mentioning.)
Fire up services.msc

Turn off/ Disable:

- Windows Update

- WIndiws Module Installer

Exit

I;m running Windows 10 Version 1607 which is the Anniversary Update from back in 2016.

Okay, I'll go play some more and see if I can do a screenshot. My problem with Steam screenshots (F12 wasn't it??) is where to find the dam thing after it's taken. I'll try.

Ah, well that's your good old screen tear caused by, well, in essence your GPU being too fast (and rendering over the monitor's refresh rate) - probably the windows update screwed with your graphic driver settings. Try forcing the VSync to On from either ingame options or the graphic driver's control panel.

Also (not sure if Fallout 4 has this option), but if you ever get to choose between Windowed Fullscreen and (actual) Fullscreen stick to (actual) Fullscreen when possible.

Thank you very, very much for this. I'm going to see if I can do that. Except I don't know how to fire up services.msc lol
Type it into your text bar/ Corena/ whatever it's called along the bottom. It should come up in the search list. Just make sure it;s found the program and not a web search. Also right click on it and Run as Admin.

All right I just made some changes in the Nvidia panel. (Really didn't change anything as VSync was on but I turned it off.. hit apply... then turned it back on and hit apply again... just in case that does something. Will go back into Fallout 4 in a minute.

And the other game that won't even start that I mentioned above might not have been related to the update. That may be related to the new monitor (as I found a solution just now) I got about a month or two ago (can't remember but it is possible it's been that long since I played that one so to be fair I can't really be sure that's related to the update).

My old monitor was a 1080p (1920X1080) one and this one is 2560X1440. I just read on another forum that if I change my screen resolution to 1920X1080 it will run... and sure enough it did. Now I'm wondering if there is some way to automate that so I don't have to change the screen resolution back and forth every time I play. I used to do what were called "Batch" files in MS:DOS about a million years ago but don't have a clue if there's anything similar under Windows that I could use to automate that.

Oh and there was one more thing they changed in the latest Windows 10 update, which forces your game to run in Windowed Fullscreen even if it's traditionally an exclusive mode Fullscreen game.

If you go to the Control Panel (PC Settings), you'll notice a new "Gaming" section. Click on that and make sure all the useless stuff there is turned off/unticked, especially the "Show Game bar when I play full-screen games Microsoft has verified" option.
