In my opinion, Metal Gear Series had a good AI since 90s, also, Halo games always had good AI. F.E.A.R., too.
Can't disagree with you too, Batman Arkham series have really fun AI to mess up with. The "fear" factor, to make they freak out is really well made. :)

How many of the games mentioned have been made in a last few years though?. Having any of the rpg's and 4X ones had good AI recently?

Enemy AI is great. They can dodge grenades, move out of the way of vehicles, and perform some basic tactics. Ally AI is just garbage, especially when driving. If you let the AI take be the gunner, it will start hitting a target, and then switch to another one without finishing off the current one. The first enemy retreats to replenish its shields, and to take it down you have to start from scratch again. The process repeats, and on higher difficulties you will make zero progress.

When I let the marines drive, I start talking to the AI...and I sound a lot like Gordon Ramsay.

"What the !@#$ are you doing? There's only one way to go and you're just sitting there!"

"You're driving in circles you !@#$ing donkey!"

"We're being hit with artillery and you just stopped for no reason?! ARE YOU !@#$ING STEWPID?!?!?!?"

I will admit that they AI isn't entirely useless. They're good for canon fodder, although on legendary this time frame is very brief. They also have unlimited ammo, and you can swap weapons in Halo 2 onward. So just give them a power weapon when its running low.

Watchdogs 2 has the best AI.

Yeah, that and the legend about the forgotten Quake ]|[ server going on for years with Bots that instead of fighting chose not to in order to stay alive.

I like F.E.A.R. Coming to the gameplay, it is a typical tactical shooter game with a spooky storyline. What sets it apart is the opponent AI which is extremely good and acts on even minute details. For example, in the game if a player takes cover behind a barricade, the enemy AI quickly processes and throws a grenade to eliminate the player. Another aspect is the Game AI’s communication in the game. The enemies talk and detail their movements according to that of the players.

Another vote for F.E.A.R. The enemies act quite intelligently.

Quite a lot of recommendations for F.E.A.R.. I remember one of my mates had it but it's not a game I played a great deal myself. I'll have to bump it up my wishlist, as it sounds really good. You mean DoW 1? My recollection of that game is that the skirmish AI wasn't very well-balanced. I remember if you had it on the lowest difficulty level, it was trivially easy to beat, but on the next level up, it was ridiculously fast and aggressive, with nothing in between. The AI mod you mention sounds interesting. It's not a game I've played recently though but damn! I wish they would release that one DRM-free ... /shakes fist :-(

Yup DoW1. I remember 1v1 matches on hard against the AI could be really, really tough, but still beatable. The multiplayer scene was also a lot of fun, at least up to the release of Soulstorm, when the Dark Crusade lobbies emptied :(

Any recommendations for a game with good 4X AI?

The story is really interesting, but implausible.
An AI is coded using a limited amount of strings and it can only "expand itself" if it's coded with a neural network (ANN).

That means the whole story is fake."

I wish I had knowledge of a game that uses something like an ANN in its systems. That would mean really smart opponents with human like abilities to counter human strategies.
