morolf: Didn't exactly stop me from playing it, but Warcraft 3's cartoon graphics certainly were a factor in me not liking the game all that much. Can't stand this exaggerated cartoon style in games.
I sort of get what you mean. Warcraft III is a great representative of its genre even after all these years, and the cartoony graphics have aged pretty well, but I fail to grasp what tone the franchise is trying to set. There are what I have interpreted as real attempts at a storyline and character development, but they are punctuated by tongue-in-cheek bits, the serious lines are delivered by these muppet characters and the world feels cobbled together by multiple people emphasizing different things, so I find it incredibly difficult to take seriously.
The SpellForce series is objectively worse, but I like it better than Warcraft (well, the first game is a bit crap, but 2 is alright) because the tone feels deliberately camp, which suits the otherwise similar art style.
