Syberia

Oh, I forgot: Thanks, gog.com, for the free game. :)
New PC so:

Saints Row 3
GTA 4
Mortal Kombat Komplete (love Freddy Kreuger)
Crookz
Grim Dawn
Kerbal
Shadow Tactics

Several of these I have played before but, and I'm not exaggerating, going back and being able to up the settings on them really do make them completely new fresh gaming experiences.
I mentioned it before, and I really do need to go back and apologize to everyone I accused of being crazy for loving Grim Dawn. With the lighting shadows and effects it is a GREAT GREAT game.

Yeah, some games certainly look drab at the lowest settings. Good you got your new commputer working, fixed or replaced. :-)
I was trying to give C&C: Red Alert another shot today, this time starting the Soviet campaign, but, damn, I'm just not good enough in strategies.

Missions in the game are varied and very nicely designed, but they also require to follow very strict order and it's just too much for me. I remember finding the proper path during many replays, when I was a kid, but now I'm just too old and too slow to succeed - my dogs are killed by friendly-fire of tanks and rocket launchers, my infrantry is mown by peaceful harvesters of my enemy etc. ;) And also the very first missions does not provide any base to recreate units killed in action...

There is interesing phenomenon here, because I'm fine with terrible graphics of very old games, but for newer titles, when settings are lowered to much, they look just ugly and are unplayable for me (even if they still look much better then oldies!).

the first one?

I don't blame you. It was my opinion that those games got progressively more forgiving, the first one being the hardest and the 3rd being almost easy.

Yup, the very first one. I've played only C&C (a bit) and C&C: Red Alert (which I loved for beautiful cut-scenes, but stuck somewhere before the end because my pirate version - from dark ages of gaming in post-communist Poland - was corrupted). Now it's free and works like a charm on Linux, but it seems I'm missing some skills or just patience ;)

By the way - do the next games share the same atmosphere and gameplay? Perhaps it could be some solution for me, if sequels are easier indeed.

I love the sequels but they are more "cartoony". And they are A LOT faster. Even the missions that are long still move fast, not in a panic run for your life way, it's just a quick moving game, nothing labors. The vehicles almost look like really tricked out MicroMachines with outlandish weaponry and over the top dialogue. A lot of "Die Capitalist Pig!" when you play as the Russians. :P

One thing I really loved was the real settings. In #2 you get to blow up part of D.C., NYC, San Fran, Hollywood, and even my home town of St. Louis. They are scaled down cartoon depictions but still fast and crazy fun. The whole things is VERY VERY tongue and cheek.

Oh, I see. So I'll rather pass, it's not for me. As I said, it's hard to control even a few units during the first missions of C&C:RA1. If the next one is even faster... Huh... :D

That "real" setting sounds interesting! And being more cartoon-style - not.

Are you sure? :P

That's the Pearl Harbor mission. :D
Lately I've been trying to clean a little bit my backlog tag on GOG. Made it through Stasis, The Last Door: Season 1 and Limbo.

Righ now I'm playing The Walking Dead: Season 1. Actually I've played it when it came out, but never completed it. After years it's not that great, but still - it's a good game.
Anyone here play card games as in Hoyle type stuff? I like having them around to play when I'm watching football or just half dozing but it seems like they haven't made any good pc versions for a while.

The newest ones on Steam are evidently atrocious.

RangerSolo: To the person who asked me about the game play of DQ 11.
I am very sorry to be so late to respond.

Metal slimes are veru hard to get but not impossible. It is still true to turn based play as it first debuted. I am really enjoying the game. I have already beaten the main plot. I am now doing the second run of it. Sometime in 2018 the English version is rumored to be ready.

dtgreene: That was me.

I'd still like to know about the character customization (or lack thereof) and the growth system. (Also, do you create your party, or is your party (like in DQ3 or DQ9) or does your party consist of characters you meet along the way (like every other DQ game, except 1 for obvious reasons)?)
You can't really make your own character like a normal RPG. You start out as the main character of the story and as you travel around meet new characters to join you. You have a skill tree for all characters and can choose which path to level up in first. The kicker is some of the skills require a lot of points to get them. The one thing I don't like is not being able to switch weapons in battle. Sometimes I forget to swap before going to places and some weapons just don't have the skill bonus on attacking that I need. Other than that certain costumes are fun to look at when they are wearing. Won't spoil the fun here. But once you see and what some of the anime is capable of doing, you'll get it.
