I've found that in quite many older games, which support also higher resolutions, the problem for me becomes that text and objects become far too small, when they apparently were designed for 640x480 or 800x600 resolutions. This includes even 3D games like System Shock 2, Deus Ex, Unreal etc. Then again for those using the lower resolutions isn't that much of a problem as there really isn't that much detail anyway (texture quality etc.) which would make the higher resolutions that more useful. E.g. when i played System Shock 2 one or two years ago... I first tried to play it on some higher resolution but I think I ended up playing it at either 640x480 or 800x600 because the text really became quite small to read, and the game objects in your inventory etc. were so tiny.
I guess staring at a bigger monitor (than my 17.3 inch laptop screen) helps with that. I have sometimes played on my 47" HDTV but it still has the same problem as I am quite a longer away from it than a monitor.
Newer games don't generally seem to have these kinds of problems, everything seems to be designed so that no matter which resolution you choose, everything is scaled properly. Then I am free to choose as high resolution as my computer can comfortably run, up to 1920x1080 (that's e.g. where I run TeamFortress 2 with max details, getting 60 fps).
