toxicTom: Now you've done it. I just installed Freespace (2). SCP version... And I'll be damned if I play it on Insane...
I'm possibly going to replay them with SCP at some point, but I couldn't easily figure out how it is installed for Freespace 1. The little information I understood is that it is originally meant for Freespace 2, but there is some way to play FS1 missions on it as well.

That's actually very easy to do: You need FS2 installer files, then just download the FreeSpaceOpenInstaller (you need Java). When you install SCP you can choose a variety of mods, one of which is FSPort (various upgraded versions), which is basically Freespace. Another one is FSPost_str, which is Silent Threat (Reborn = new and improved version).
So Freespace is basically a mod for SCP/Freespace 2. Using one of the included launchers (I use YAL - Yet Another Launcher) just select you want to play FSPort from the Mod list.

Installing and setting up the stuff is very automated (some GB of data are downloaded for the upgraded graphics and stuff). And after that the game just looks totally awesome...
Just started Witcher3 for the first shot.
My level 4 Geralt went to Velen, the second area but enemies in here were tough to beat than ones in white orchard, the first area.
I'll need grinding him a bit.

Other than that Tropico1 and RollerCoaster Tycoon Deluxe, which I bought yesterday on sale.
Dear diary,

Freespace: Silent Threat

I actually liked the second mission quite a lot. It felt almost like a puzzle I needed to crack.

At first I approached it with a "tell wingmen to attack everyone, and shoot as fast as you can", but in the end that didn't work that well because wingmen seemed to go to all directions fighting different ships. Also they always seemed to take lots of damage from the bigger ships, and I always lost one or two for each of those. Quite soon, I was alone without wingmen, and there were still a couple of bigger ships with heavy fighter cover around, too much for me to handle alone I think.

Then I noticed that apparently the mission has no time limit whatsoever, and the enemies will not engage you until you go near them. Plus, you can freely replenish your ship during the mission, so just keep using those missiles freely. The main problem was that taking down those bigger ships is quite hard, due to their high defences with laser cannons and turrets.

So, I equipped my Hercules fighter with Hornet missiles (mainly against smaller enemy fighters), and Phoenix V missiles because these have a higher range (1750 m). Now the problem was, how to make sure my wingmen will not follow me nor engage the bigger ships (or any ships for that matter)? Not sure if there is some other way to make sure they never go even near any enemies, but I called the rearming supply vessel, and when it was idling around, I told all fighters to cover it, which means they stay near it all the time. It acted as a baby sitter for my wingmen, it was quite funny to watch when I called the small supply ship for rearmament, it would be followed by three wings of big bulky guard dogs in a perfect formation. :)

After that it was just a question of attacking each big ship alone, by myself, with the missiles. Targeting their different subsystems (especially the Weapon subsystem), doing a little circling movement to avoid its cannons, and just letting those Phoenix missiles fly. And when I am out of them, use the Hornet missiles a bit closer (range 1250 m if I recall correctly).

Then get back to the supply ship, get more missiles, rinse and repeat. Also there are some of those pesky sentry guns near some crates, take them out from afar with the Phoenix missiles too.

The only time I really needed to tell wingmen to engage was when approaching those big ships which had heavy fighters covering them. Sometimes I'd use myself as a bait, go close enough so that they attacked me, hurried back to my wingmen (who were parked near the supply ship), and tell them to take care of the enemies on my tail.

The last enemy to destroy was that science vessel. There the game designers had but a little surprise for you, if you are closer than 3000m to it when it blows then you die too. :) I could have told my wingmen to take care of it (sacrificing them while I watch them all blow from afar), but since I am not an evil guy or anything, I shot it from 1700 m with Phoenix missiles, and when it finally blew up, hurried away with afterburners. There was enough time for that, I got little over 4000m away from it with my Hercules when it blew up.

That's the kind of missions I like! Not something where you need to hurry doing dozen things at the same time before time is up, but a more relaxed but still challenging dilemma where you just need to find a good approach.

Just been playing a lot of Devil Daggers. I feel like I'm going to have a heart attack.
Master Of Orion 2. People said skip the third one because without extensive modding it comes across as a clunky hell of micromanagement on crack for the game mechanics so I just grabbed one and two together while they were on sale during one of those 4x/strategy themed sales recently awhile back. Gonna make an empire... And see which aliens are gonna be allies vs. stab me in the back, while researching my tech tree, to be the most advanced race in the danged Galaxy... Or get completely wiped out by an ill-timed Antarean invasion while my trade partners and other space neighbors refuse to help me with backup because they caught up to that I had spies reverse engineering parts of their infrastructure before that point. Lol.
Dear diary,

Freespace: Silent Threat, Finished the 6th mission I think ("Secret Recovery").

Another overly odd mission (which is why am am telling you, dear diary). There is this station where you are supposed to protect Epsilon 1 transport while it docks there. If it fails, Epsilon 2 tries the same. If it fails too, you are supposed to destroy the station altogether. So you kinda get three shots in achieving your primary objectives.

The first batch of enemies is insanely difficulty (in insane difficulty level, figures). If I fight them, my wingmen will drop like flies, no matter what they are flying and packing, and for myself it is also very difficult to simply stay alive, there always seem to be like couple of the enemies right at my butt while I am trying to shoot a third one.

A couple of times I survived them, Epsilon 2 even docked with the station, but more powerful enemies just keep coming from the nearby enemy cruiser, making it an endless fight. I think they destroyed the transport anyway so then I was supposed to destroy the station while fighting several enemies. Argh! Also it seems the station is surrounded by enemy sentries, good luck trying to shoot them down while fighting the enemies.

So I tried different approaches:

Concentrate on destroying the enemy cruiser while leaving your wingmen to fight the enemy fighters: I couldn't find a place to hide, trying to destroy it while having one or two of those enemies at your tail seems undoable.

I then said phuck it and chose a fast fighter (Valkyrie), and from the very start just run away from the enemy fighters, My wingmen were not as lucky, they died anyway, but I was able to speed away from them, several of the enemies on my tail.

This turned out to be a good move because this way I was able to lure several of the enemy fighters far away from the action. Another friendly wing appeared there, and they were able to fight any enemies still near the station pretty ok. At that point the enemies on my tail stopped chasing me and turned back to go fight, but they were already so far away from there that it would take a quite a long time for them to get back to action.

Epsilon 1&2 transports failed anyway (maybe the sentry guns killed them), but since the remaining friendly wing was still healthy and in duty and the enemy fighters were still far away from them, I told them to attack the station. Yep, it worked, they were able to destroy it because I had been able to lure many of the enemies away from them in the beginning.

Mission accomplished, albeit in a rather dirty and non-optimal way (the game would have preferred that the station would have survived, but oh well...). Also I didn't even think of trying to reach the bonus objective of destroying that enemy cruiser, not with those insanely powerful enemy fighters around.

I wonder if this was really how the game designers expected one to finish this mission? Probably not. In a way I am mad that I had to use a trick like this to barely finish the mission, but in a way it is also rather cool, using unconventional methods to achieve your objectives.

I'm playing through "Stasis" that I was generously gifted in the community giveaway. I'm liking it so far, really good atmosphere. It reminds me of a mix between "The White Chamber" and "The Experiment". Even though this type of story has been done before, waking up to a deserted ship, I'm enjoying it. Haven't gotten much of a story yet, but I'm hopeful! And I absolutely love the ambient sound like the static and announcements.

Terraria hard mode. It's insane - haven't managed to come even close to defeating one of the bosses. Hopefully a set of adamantite/mithril armour will make me a little less squishy though. At least I found a unicorn mount :D

Defeated a giant snake, boss, thingy in DevilMayCry4. I've started to learn how to smash enemies upwards and shoot them while they're suspended in the air. It's cool.
