Dear diary,
Freespace: Silent Threat
I actually liked the second mission quite a lot. It felt almost like a puzzle I needed to crack.
At first I approached it with a "tell wingmen to attack everyone, and shoot as fast as you can", but in the end that didn't work that well because wingmen seemed to go to all directions fighting different ships. Also they always seemed to take lots of damage from the bigger ships, and I always lost one or two for each of those. Quite soon, I was alone without wingmen, and there were still a couple of bigger ships with heavy fighter cover around, too much for me to handle alone I think.
Then I noticed that apparently the mission has no time limit whatsoever, and the enemies will not engage you until you go near them. Plus, you can freely replenish your ship during the mission, so just keep using those missiles freely. The main problem was that taking down those bigger ships is quite hard, due to their high defences with laser cannons and turrets.
So, I equipped my Hercules fighter with Hornet missiles (mainly against smaller enemy fighters), and Phoenix V missiles because these have a higher range (1750 m). Now the problem was, how to make sure my wingmen will not follow me nor engage the bigger ships (or any ships for that matter)? Not sure if there is some other way to make sure they never go even near any enemies, but I called the rearming supply vessel, and when it was idling around, I told all fighters to cover it, which means they stay near it all the time. It acted as a baby sitter for my wingmen, it was quite funny to watch when I called the small supply ship for rearmament, it would be followed by three wings of big bulky guard dogs in a perfect formation. :)
After that it was just a question of attacking each big ship alone, by myself, with the missiles. Targeting their different subsystems (especially the Weapon subsystem), doing a little circling movement to avoid its cannons, and just letting those Phoenix missiles fly. And when I am out of them, use the Hornet missiles a bit closer (range 1250 m if I recall correctly).
Then get back to the supply ship, get more missiles, rinse and repeat. Also there are some of those pesky sentry guns near some crates, take them out from afar with the Phoenix missiles too.
The only time I really needed to tell wingmen to engage was when approaching those big ships which had heavy fighters covering them. Sometimes I'd use myself as a bait, go close enough so that they attacked me, hurried back to my wingmen (who were parked near the supply ship), and tell them to take care of the enemies on my tail.
The last enemy to destroy was that science vessel. There the game designers had but a little surprise for you, if you are closer than 3000m to it when it blows then you die too. :) I could have told my wingmen to take care of it (sacrificing them while I watch them all blow from afar), but since I am not an evil guy or anything, I shot it from 1700 m with Phoenix missiles, and when it finally blew up, hurried away with afterburners. There was enough time for that, I got little over 4000m away from it with my Hercules when it blew up.
That's the kind of missions I like! Not something where you need to hurry doing dozen things at the same time before time is up, but a more relaxed but still challenging dilemma where you just need to find a good approach.
